If you do a general search on reviews about Mikes you'll find the service is poor, the food is poor, the setting is great, and the crabs are great. In genreal this is all true. In an earlier review on this page someone mentions the rude man in the parking lot. That's Tony. He's the owner and the reason the restaurant receives the reviews it does. He is a rude and generally angry guy who really doesn't care about his customers experience. Mikes stays crowded on the weekends because it pretty much is the only Crabhouse around and they are right on the water. The staff at Mikes however works hard to make things right but struggle between trying to make customers happy and a boss who doesn't care. Mikes is generally understaffed which directly affects service. If you ask to see the Manager you will probably see Tony who really doesn't care and will tell you.
The setting is nice, and the crabs are good and sometimes great. All the other food is poor to okay.
I go to Mikes 1-2 times a week and know all the servers and the owner. I only go for crabs and beer and try not to interact with Tony. I'd suggest you do the same. If there was a Crab House close by my house (about 4 blocks away) I would not go to Mikes. I only go there because I love crabs and beer and they are the only restaurant in the area with both.
Suggestion for the Best Crabs and great food on the Chesapeake is Kentmorr Restaurant on the eastern shore. Great crabs, atmosphere, and if you have members in your group who won't eat crabs Kentmoorr has great Steaks and seafood. Always call first because Kentmorr only sells local crabs.
Crabs at their best!: Great place to take your boat or car and the kids to feast! The food is great. And the location is totally convienient for Annapolis/Baltimore/DC access. Desserts are the BEST any where!!!
