Yes, Yomato's is dark and typically empty. And YES the waitress has a personality all her own, but we find it fun and a challenge to get waited on knowing that before we order she will try to take our menus away. :-) As long as you warm up to the charm of the place, you will enjoy the visit. The food is very good; vvery affordable, very original and if you ask nicely, you can even get a side of kimchi. I recommend you give it a whirl.
Miso-soup was really good.
But sushi was awful... I had my first experience to eat warm fish/ sushi in my whole life at this place.
The worst thing was the service, we asked for wasabi and the women who just finished counting money at the register brought the wasabi over with her bare hands, no plate or glove. The price was reasonable for quality sushi but not for the sushi we ate. Being from Japan my husband and I (who aren't picky by the way, just honest people) will most likely never go back to this rest. ever again.
We love Yomato, this is a great place for simple sushi and affordable good food. If you want to be serve like a king this is not the place for you, but if you want a diverse Asian food, great sushi and Asian beer you just found one of the best places in Severna Park/Arnold.
After you go to Yomato a couple times you realize that the service is not rude, it's just the waitress personality.
And don't forget to get the miso soup is the best miso soup in the Baltimore-Annapolis area.
I agree with Mar - their takeout orders are this restaurants livelihood. My husband refuses to go back because of the abrupt manner of service, and the dark, bland, rather dated atmosphere. The food was average - not bad, but nothing to rave about compared to so many other great local places.
On Valentine's Day, my boyfriend and I went to Yomato's for dinner. It is one of our favorite places to eat. We've been loyal customers. But on this day, we had a bad experience. We knew it was busy because of Valentine's Day, but the restaurant was not full. We soon discovered that things were very hectic because the staff was long in taking orders and bringing the food. We had ordered three rolls, but it was taking a while. After 1 hr, we had enough and decided to cancel the order. First, it would have been courteous to let us know that they are delayed, instead of letting us sit there. But the most upsetting part of the experience was the fact that we saw them filling take out orders and walk-in customers one after another, while the customers sitting in the restaurant had to wait 30-40 min for their orders. It was clear that the priority was the take-out over the eat in customers. Normally, we would be more understanding because of the holiday, but this was just unfair and inconsiderate. We had made an effort to have a special evening, and ended up stuck for one and a half hours in a restaurant that seemed to be focused on the bottom line instead of taking care of their loyal customers. We were very disappointed to say the least. Be careful when you go to this restaurant. Ask how long the wait will be for the food. Otherwise, you might get stuck and left out in the cold.
