Roy's Place, Gaithersburg

A group of my friends and business colleagues have been eating at Roy's Place every year for the past 36 years. We had lunch there on December 27, 2010 and were entirely satisfied with our dining experience. The size of some of the sandwiches has shrunk a bit over the years and certainly the prices have gone up, but we saw no signs of the poor quality described in the one-star reviews on this page. The choice of draft beers and wines by the glass has actually improved. So if you like having over 200 sandwiches to choose from, Roy's is still the place to go in Gaithersburg.

what a horrible experience.... as we pulled up we first noticed a crowd of very unpleasent people appearing to be doing drugs....food that was supposed to be hot was cold, cooked very poorly...i ordered a hot sandwich and it came on cold bread that had mold on it, the cheese was barely melted yet somehow it took 40 minutes to get our food... i asked one of the employees to speak to a manager and was told no manager was available...what a shame...my family has been coming here for years and last saturday was a complete let down of a family dinning experience...this place wont be here much longer and its a shame.. 1 out of 5 stars and im being generous....absolutly awful!

I have dined at Roy's Place a few times, and it was great.It has been quite a while sence I have been there. We went there for a birthday celebration last Friday. I can't tell you how dissapointed we all were. Seriously, the breaded mushrooms were frozen in the middle. Our orders got all screwed up. Burgers were dry and cold. And the sandwiches had very little meat to them. My bread was stale and the meat was fatty. I will never go there again. Subway makes better sandwiches! Roy must be turning over in his grave!

An excellent, homespun, eclectic, locally-owned restaurant that takes us back to an era before chains dominated the sandwich scene. Between the menu with some 200 sandwich choices and the bar, this is a curiosity shoppe of food and drink. You will find good values, choices you have never seen before and an opportunity for family dining, for lunch or dinner. Whether you want to stay safe with a thick juicy hamburger, or try something more wild or exotic, you will be pleased with the outcome.

Great mix of people eat at Roy's (couples, groups, families) because the food is great, the price is right. The menu in itself is entertaining. And even though the menu is OVERWHELMING, you can't go wrong with any of their burgers, they are amazing. One con about Roy's: while the veteran waitstaff are great, some of the younger members aren't very attentive. Also, the bar isn't so great. The drinks are much smaller than average, and my Cosmopolitan seemed like it was missing something. That's why I'm giving 4/5 stars, but you should definitely check it out!

Roy's is one of those places you have to visit at least once. The menu can be very overwhelming - I think there are at 150 sandwich variations. Many of the sandwiches are named for celebrities, both local and national. If you can't find a sandwich to love here - you must be from Mars. The ambiance is great. Don't expect a lot from the service, though. Definitely not a place if you only have 30 minutes.

I have been going to Roy's Place for over 30 years, first with my parents and now with my children. There are menu items that are not sandwiches, but ordering them would be like going to a sushi restaurant and getting a hamburger - Roy's is all about the 200 sandwiches. Negative points? Over the past 5 years or so the service has gotten a little unreliable, don't go if you're in a hurry. The prices are a little high for sandwiches. By all means set aside a little time and money, go order a beer while you peruse the 20 page menu, say hi to Roy if he happens to be around (he tries to get in at least once a day) and have fun.
