1789 Restaurant, Washington

This place is a treat. The atmosphere is charming, staff attentive, and food excellent. The portions are the right size, not too much or too little, and the strawberry shortcake was beyond incredible. A great place for a romantic dinner and just a walk away from the craziness of M Street.

i ate here on NYE '07 and it was FANTASTIC! the staff was so friendly from the time i made the reservation & throughout the entire night. i ordered the steak tartare & rockfish and both were out of this world. my boyfriend ordered the tasting (5 courses with wine pairings) and the portions were pretty small, so i shared my food with him (by contrast, my portions from the regular menu were pretty generous). Our waiter was outstanding, and i can't wait to go back. Beautiful rooms make you feel like you're at an expensive Inn.

My favorite D.C. restaurant, I have had dinner there about eight times in the past ten years. Magnificent food and gracious service in a charming atmosphere. Not a huge wine list, but high quality. 1789 can get a bit crowded, and so is probably not the best place for those with hearing problems. The bathroom is up a flight of stairs, which might be a problem for some. Don't even bother trying to find nearby street parking, just pull up to the front door and use their valet parking. Expensive, and worth every cent.

My husband and I went to this gorgeous restaurant during restaurant week for the first time, and were delighted with the entire experience. Not only the ambiance was beautiful and romantic, but the service and the food were impeccable. Waiters were very friendly and extremely helpful with their suggestions of dishes and wine. Our wine glasses were always full, our meals were superb, and we both were completely satisfied at the end of this great meal. Our past experience has been that other restaurants create a special menu for restaurant week with very limited options. 1789 offered a generous selection of dishes to choose from, and generous portions as well. This is a place where we intend to go back to take family and friends. Thank you! PS: The escargots and the vanilla bread pudding are simply divine!

We were very unhappy with our dining experience at 1789. 1789 takes portion control to a new level. We had high expectations from the rave reviews we read about 1789, but my party of four (I assure you that on one in my party has a gluttonous appetite) left the restaurant feeling hungry after spending $245.00 for four entres, four salads and four glasses of wine. We joked about stopping for pizza on our way home! We sincerely wished that we had asked for more bread while we were dining!

The tables were way to close together, the waiter had to lean over us to reach our table. Service was poor and the room was very loud due to the number of tables crammed into it. There are much better places in DC to have dinner.
