Shelly's Back Room
This downtown establishment is decorated to resemble the gentleman's clubs of long ago. But rather than giving off any air of exclusivity, Shelly's is more of a fanciful theme-club where everyone is welcome. The gracious setting includes high-backed armchairs from which a diverse clientele sip from swollen glasses and tap cigars. Large windows lighten up the front room. Though the decor is reminiscent of a bygone era, the menu hails from this day and age. There are burgers, salads, soups and sandwiches.
I hate to hear stories like that I feel that if restraunts want to treat customers like that then they should not stay in business very long. I hope you took some kind of action wrote a letter to the main office; then go from there,
My experience was not good. My co-worker and I walked over from the JW Marriott on a Thursday evening hoping to enjoy a cigar and drink. While tables appeared to be open in the dining area, we were told nothing was available but we were welcome to go to the bar. The seats at the bar were taken but there were two standing tables open in the bar area. We did notice there was a sign saying these are reserved for 3 or more. Given the restaurant was not busy and no other places were open we went ahead and sat down. The waiter came over and explained to us we couldn't sit there since there were only two of us. We inquired as to where we might sit. He offered no suggestions simply explaining the manager wouldn't like us sitting there. During our conversation yet another 3 person table opened up. We interpretted this as we were not welcome there and left.
If you're tired of piddling away money on long, crowded nights of drinking, I've got a new place for you. Shelly's is a comfortable and most of all relaxing venue. It still provides the atypical bar atmosphere , but with a slight twist. You can smoke cigars here! Yes folks, the famous cigar bar, Shelly's has TVs for the games. Yes, it also has booze (good, too). They have an extensive list of drinks to compliment most cigars (I had a Mac Baron Rothschild with a lovely Taylor Fladgate port). Plenty of seats, including lounge chairs and a big couch supplement the already laid-back motif. The food was good, too. Count me in!
This is probably one of my favorite spots in DC. The aviance is classy but not pretension. There is always a fine selection of cordials and cigars, but its not stuffy or smoky. You can sit at the bar, dinner table, or finely upholstered sofas and loveseats. I have been visiting Shelly's for a few years and have always had great service, food, cigars and drinks. Parking is a bit tough at times unless you park in the underground garage 1/2 block away. Oh yeah, there are ample TVs for watching the Mighty Redskins march towards the SuperBowl!
