This place is HUGE. It s a labyrinth of bars and dinner rooms. The food here is great, the bartenders are great, the atmosphere is loud but still good, and there are several bars inside this once place for you to find a place to enjoy some drinks too. The only downside is the rudeness of some wait staff, for instance when I went, our waiter seemed to have had an issue with the guys at our table even though they were more reserved than the ladies with us and none of us were loud but if we had questions it would look like a huge problem for the waiter to be bothered and he often got snappy at the men but not the women. It was very strange but overall from everything else they offer there, great.

Great place to have lunch and a beer in DC. Even better for a Friday 3;00 p.m. confab with the politicos bragging about leaving work early, grabbing a drink, and heading for their weekend retreats. Amazing what you will hear.

I agree wholeheartedly with Steve S. The real Old Ebbitt Grill was incredible in all respects. As Steve points out it is now very good, very expensive, and has none of it's original ambiance. I will always remember the spot at the bar that was reserved for that salty old timer whose name I have forgotten...what a place it used to be. I also could afford it then!

The Old Ebbitt Grill as it is now pales in comparison to its old location in the Rhodes Tavern building adjacent to the Hotel Washington near 15th and F Streets in DC. That was a classic grill, with an ancient mahogany bar and 'shotgun' style layout. It was a true classic tavern. There was balcony seating and private rooms upstairs and they served the best burgers and cottage fries I ever ate in my life. Now, it is more of a 'power lunch' politico and yuppie hangout, with snobby wait staff and overpriced fare. I never thought I would be old enough to say this, but I long for the good old days of simple pleasures and less pretense.
