The Old Ebbitt Grill as it is now pales in comparison to its old location in the Rhodes Tavern building adjacent to the Hotel Washington near 15th and F Streets in DC. That was a classic grill, with an ancient mahogany bar and 'shotgun' style layout. It was a true classic tavern. There was balcony seating and private rooms upstairs and they served the best burgers and cottage fries I ever ate in my life.
Now, it is more of a 'power lunch' politico and yuppie hangout, with snobby wait staff and overpriced fare. I never thought I would be old enough to say this, but I long for the good old days of simple pleasures and less pretense.
