Good Meal - But Not a Great Meal
I was in DC on business, dining alone, and the Chop House looked like a great place to get a steak. I love the feel of the place, and enjoy trying local brews. I started out a little disappointed when they seated me at a table in the middle of the dining room, surrounded by other patrons on all sides. When you're a party of one, it's nice to be in a booth or against a wall or window so you have someplace to look other than at other people talking and eating and so that you don't feel like you're in a fish bowl yourself. Service was friendly, but slow. It took way too long for my waitress to take my drink order and bring my beer. The folks at the next table were having the same experience. Has anyone seen our waitress? Likewise, once my food was ordered, it took a very long time to arrive. If I was having scintillating conversation with my wife it probably would have been less noticeable, but I wasn't on a date so it seemed a very long wait.
My pepper-crusted New York strip, when it arrived, was good. Not great - but good. For $30 it probably should have been more memorable. The baked potato was excellent, as was the terrific fresh-baked corn bread that came before my meal. The beer (Bride's Ale?) was also very good.
Great atmosphere, good food, a little slow. I'll go back again if my wife is with me, and if I have plenty of time.
