The Blue Parrot is a hidden gem amist Italian and Mexican restaurants near Union and Lincoln St. in Wilmington. It has a New Orleans theme, decorated with festive mardi gras masks, beads, neon signs and blues music. (There is also a live band each night, which we didn't stay for) They specialized in a mixed drink called a hurricane, which was very tasty and had just enough liquor in it. For our appetizer, we had a full order of shrimp and crab nachos which was piled high with seafood, melted cheese, and homemade salsa. DELICIOUS!! My main course was a turkey panini, which was made with fresh turkey, just the right amount of veggies, and fresh bread. It was served with homeade crispy potatoe chips. They were a little too salty, but very delicious. The waitress was less than professional, but the atmosphere, food, and drink was great and I would definitely reccommend this place to any one of my friends!
We had a small going away party for a coworker at this establishment on 8/14/07 The meals were brought out one at a time with several meals having been totally omitted (so they were much later than the others because they were never cooked). I ordered the gumbo and, when it finally arrived (after reminding the waiter that I had also ordered a meal) I can only describe it as horrible. The meat was so over cooked that it melted in my mouth making it impossible to tell one meat from another. The buggish seafood placed on the top was still frozen. I made the waiter aware but I was offered no apology by the staff nor was my barely eaten meal noted (even after I brought it to the waiters attention). At the least I had expected management to apologize for the horrible meal, maybe offer me something less ruinous as a replacement. I received nothing but a rotten taste in my mouth. Needless to say we left the restaurant ASAP and did not stay to drink and enjoy the band (which wasn't New Orleans style as promised) because we had been treated so shabbily.
This is by far one of my favorite restaurants in Wilmington!!! I work nearby and often go there (at least 2 or 3 times a week) for drinks and a late night snack. Every night they have a different mojito flavor on special (ask for the tall glass!). My favorites are Mango (Fridays) and peach(Wednesdays). However, you can get any flavor any night. I also love their nachos and pierogies. Both are completely non-traditional. They have a New Orleans flare that is very unique. Pretty much everything here is spicy so you better like it HOT!!! They also have awesome hurricanes and good bands most nights. Prices are a tad high, but very reasonable considering the bars and restaurants in the surrounding area.
Definitely worth a try!!!
Wow, this is great food! I will be back and back and back. The coconut shrimp was scrumptious, as was everything else I tried. The Bananas Foster rocked. Nice pleasant service, too. Outdoor terrace when the weather permits. But the food shines above all.
