Saw interesting reviews on the place and went with a group to try it out. Being a vegetarian I did check the menu in advance to make sure there would be something for me to eat considering the emphasis is on game meat.
I had the vegetarian burger (listed as a spicy vegetables and wild rice mix) and it was not very good at all. It had no taste. No seasonings. Nada. Really overpriced for what I had on the plate.
Others in the group who had the game burger had better luck. Their food was okay but they also felt it wasn't worth the price. None of us will be going back.
Good drink selection. Exotic cuisine to choose from, but I didn't like the appetizers or dinner. Service was average. I don't plan on returning. I had been excited to try this place since it was featured on tv, but I was very disappointed.
just ordered the nightly special, which was prime rib. instead of the kind of cut you would normally get when you order prime rib- namely thick and tender- they served it like a tough steak. it was thin and tough, for $29. i won't be going back.
We visited on January 3, 2009 for the first time, sat upstairs and it was an excellent/best experience and left nothing in our plates. It was the first time we had Kangaroo. We rave so much about it to many family and friends. We were really looking forward to coming back.
However, now we went in April 21, 2011 for our second time and sat upstairs again. We were really disappointed with the total service. We got the rest of leftover bread. Kangaroo experience was not the same at all. Duck in the other hand was great. Restaurant not kid-friendly at all this time.
Not a good restaurant. NOT GOOD. Food is crappy, and usually undercooked. Not to mention overpriced. Every time I have eaten there, at least one person has had to send their food back due to problems. And we are not usually picky people!! I am hard pressed to find ANYONE who likes this place!
We stop by here every couple months. They have a nice/unique Belgian beer selection with many on tap. The menu is solid with a slant towards wild game. The upstairs bar is nice on a summer afternoon. I would rate it a 4 except we had a really bad tuna appetizer there once. Probably the best place in the area at these prices.
Hello Everyone who reads this,
My name is Jeff and I am from Baltimore, Maryland. Back in February (Valentine's Day) my girlfriend and myself went to the Half Moon Restaurant as a present to both of us. She visited Australia for college a few years back and had kangaroo meat and had never had it back over here in the States. We were watching the Travel Channel on TV and saw the episode featuring Half Moon and they showed the kangaroo burger. She got so excited and insisted that we would have to go sometime.
So I figured that Valentine's weekend would be the best. We emailed Half Moon and spoke with Kristin via email who was a HUGE help. She even helped me with selecting a hotel which she did not have to do.
We left Friday morning (February 13th). We got to the hotel Friday evening and we made reservations in advanced with Kristin letting her know that we were coming up because we wanted to make sure we were able to get the kangaroo meat/burger. Kristin advised that the daily wild game changes per day and that it might not be there but they would talk to the chef.
When we got there they remembered we were coming and greeted us when we entered the restaurant. It was great. We felt like VIP's :)
The food was AMAZING! The server (Winden) was AWESOME! The server was GREAT!
I wanted to write a review sooner but have been too busy to do so. I still have the receipt from Half Moon in my wallet! (laugh out loud)
Thanks for taking the time to read this.
My girlfriend and myself are planning another trip soon up there :)
I have eaten at the Half Moon probably about fifty times or more. It is a rather dark place, with a bar up front, and dark wood in the back. There is a bright, cheery rooftop deck upstairs where smoking is not permitted. The food here is consistently great. My favorites are any seafood special, and the game burgers. The menu specials are rotated, so you can look forward to trying something new every time you go. There are also a standard menu, which I rarely order from because I like to try new things. My husband always enjoys the crab nachos as an appetizer. I like the buffalo burger and the kobe beef burger (this is usually on the special list). The desserts are outstanding--- we have found that maybe 1 out of 100 restaurants can top the quality of the desserts here. There is a great chocolate silk cake, a white chocolate rasberry cake, and cheesecakes. The desserts also change from day to day.
The negatives are few. Each time I visit the restaurant, many of the servers appear to be different. The front of the restaurant can be smokey, because of the bar. Also, this is not a cheap restaurant. Make sure you check out their weblink before you visit to make sure it is in your price range. If it is not, maybe stop by for a lunch with a friend!
