John's Roast Pork
Known for its Ultimate Cheese steak; John's Roast Pork has been in business since 1930's. It is a favorite among the people of Philadelphia. Not for the health conscious; this eatery has been serving cheese steaks for over 70 years. The food is homemade, with a special flavoring used to season it. It was awarded with 'James Beard Foundation Award for Culinary Excellence' in 2006. A must order here is the namesake sandwich (a favorite among the locals), The Hoagies are simply sumptuous and worth a try too. Get there early so that you're not disappointed.
Was in Philly for a conference and a friend of mine suggested that if we want good cheesesteaks that we need to go to John's. Well being a big eater and one that loves cheesesteaks I was fully on board for this. We grabbed a cab and made our way to John's. We get their and apparently the food network was just their filming and had left, but we also here about Andrew Zimmern's visit. Two of us ordered cheese steaks and the third ordered a Roast Pork and we decided to split all of them three ways so we can try each others. I was not disappointed. This was the best cheese steaks I have ever had and the roast pork was to die for. You will not be disappointed with this place. I live in Maryland close to DC and have been craving the Roast Pork and think I am going to make a special visit to Philly just so I can go to John's!!
I just visited today for the first time. I can not begin to tell you how awesome the roast pork was. I was so excited to try cheese steaks in Philly but it turned out the best thing I ate this trip was John's roast pork. It might have been the best sandwich I have ever eaten!!!
I live in Kansas City, Mo home of the best Bar-B-Que in the world. I found an article in the Inquirer about some students who spent 4 days finding the best steak sandwich and it was John's. When I came to Philly to visit my sister, I got her to take me to John's. God it was good! Huge sandwich with tender lean meat on a roll as long as the servers forearm. It was great. I am going to get another one the first of June when I get back there. I'm drooling as I'm typing!
Well, where to begin - This place has THE BEST CHEESESTEAK and PORK sandwiches I have ever had. That's saying a lot since I was born and raised here in Philly. I have yet to discover another place that can even come close. The amount of food for the money spent is definitely above and beyond. I highly recommend this place. Unfortunately the lines are long unless you get there early enough, but it is well worth the wait.
