Avenue Restaurant

Description

The Avenue "Diner" was established in 1958 by Grover "Doddie" Thompson. Please feel free to take a look at the framed tribute to our Founding Father who now spends his winters in Arizona & summers in Gettysburg. The Original Home was built & occupied by the George Washington Grant Heagey family early in the past century. We enjoy meeting his Family, Grand & Great Grandchildren, Nieces & Nephews and hear the stories they tell of the family & home the restaurant once was. The second story of the building remains intact to this day.

I love The Avenue Restaurant in Gettysburg, Pa. When we are in Gettysburg we eat at this place most of the time. They always have great food and lots of it!!!!! I ve never had a long wait for service or getting food, and i ve only had to wait for a table once or twice because they were full. Also the ppl who work there are always friendly.

I am sorry to say that the Avenue Restaurant has gone down hill. I was a big fan in the past but the service on my last two visits (once in the evening for a sandwhich, the second time for breakfast) was horrible. Even though they were not busy (maybe a third of the tables were taken) we waited a long time for everything from ordering to receiving our coffee to refills on water to getting the bill. The server was very young as was the hostess and it just seemed like the place would have benefited from having an adult in the room. Other customers waited innordinate amounts of time to put in their orders as well, all the while the hostess was missing in action and the waitress was chatting with someone she knew. The food seems to have gone down hill as well-the breakfast potatoes were burnt to a crisp and we couldn't eat a good portion of them. They need to make sure someone is working who can take charge and keep things running smoothly as far as coffee and drink refills, making sure wait staff make the rounds and take orders efficiently etc. If they had been busy I would be most understanding about having to wait for things but this was not the case. We went early for breakfast specifically to avoid a large crowd (8 a.m.) and 2/3 of the tables were empty. Come on Avenue...you can do better!

This place has pretty good food. Last time, I tried the Dutch salad and it was very good, sweet and warm dressing over iceburg lettuce. Yum! Then I had the 'Cole Slaw Reuben', a standard reuben sandwich with cole slaw on it. It was very tasty. My husband had a burger, very good, with potato salad, which was not so good. He said it tasted like the kind you would get from a grocery store, if you were in a hurry. Such is life. Everything else we have ever gotten there has been tasty. Service is quick, friendly and efficient.

We were disappointed with this one. This was our second time eating at the avenue and we expected a yummy friendly meal. The only one friendly was our server. The chipped beef and gravey was a grey goop. Crispy Scrapple saved the breakfast from disaster. I know it was New Years Day, but we felt very disappointed.

My wife and I ate there on a Monday. Their special was meatloaf, which I ordered. They gave me enough for two meals. My wife had sliced turkey and dressing, which was also good. Great values.

Breakfast was great. Mom and pop diner type of place. If you are looking for fine dining, this is not the place for you. Just good ole home cooking.

This place is great. I drive here from Emmitsburg weekly. Service is great, and the food is homemade. If you are looking for some good old fashioned comfort food, look no further. Great prices too! Enjoy.

An incredible experience

I was incredibly impressed by The Avenue Restaurant. Everything about it was great. We were greeted immediately by a very friendly waitress who was knowledgable about the menu and had our order to us quickly. The whole building was clean - inside and out - and the booths were comfortable. The chicken was among the tastiest food I've ever had. I ate here on the way home from a vacation, but I would gladly drive the two hours to get to The Avenue again. I loved it and can't sing it's praises enough!
