I sat down at the bar. 7/14/10. The place looked nice.
The beer taps should be moved because they are in the customers way.
The only two bartenders were dudes(prolly homo's).
I waited to order a beer....waited....left thirsty.
I dont know if this place sucks but at this point I cant say its great.
There was one beautiful waitress waiting for customers outside so Ill give the place a couple stars.
I/we typically love Champs. Was there last night, 6/30/10, to relax, grab a beer and a quick bite. Guiness not ready because nitrogen needed to be changed. Waitress offered another type of beer but I decided to wait. Fifteen minutes later beer comes to the table and is awful - no head at all and flat.
Took 35 minutes for food to come -- sandwiches with salad on the side. Asked for salad dressing on side, instead sandwich dressing was put on the side. Fork had very sharp section, nearly sliced my finger.
Was not busy there and waitress keep saying sorry for the mix up but never explained what mix up was. Ruined the evening as it took us 'til 8:30 to get out of there. Hope this is not a trend as we love Champs otherwise.
It's a well known fact in town that female employees are subject to physical harassment by male ownership. You want to feel bad for them, but when you get crap service, you forget all about it. Then, when the food is sub-par, it makes it even worse. Forget Champs, there are a half a dozen places in State College that have better food, better prices, and less snobby staff, even at 2 AM when you're dying for decent delivery!
PS, if it were possible, I'd give negative stars, but to emphasize my point, they get 1 star.
My girlfriend and I would go to Champ's maybe twice a week for a drink and to watch a game or get on the internet. There was this creepy bar tending that worked downstairs in the Lou's Stick room. He would always staer at my GF. She said he went to high school with me, he is a weirdo she said. He made her feel uncomfortable all the time and I would too. The guy from then on remembered us as her and I walked in. He goes to us, Coors lite tonight? every time, but he would never say anything to her just stare.
Another time we were watching a game downstairs in Lou's Stick Room, and some older creepy guy came over and was making insults to her right in front of me, I told him to sit down politely. He Defiantly had to much to drink. He kept coming over and putting his hands on her, really uncomfortable. I was about to punch him, but I had to keep my cool. He would shout stuff at the game that we were watching, made the whole experience terrible. The creepy bar tender did nothing about it at all. Didn't even tell him to quiet down or anything. So we will never go there again. That is the final verdict.
I eat at Champs a lot but I go there for the atmosphere and to watch the football games. The food is okay, although over priced, but the service is HORRIBLE. The wait staff is the worst I've ever seen, they don't know a thing about service and are very inattentive. I once waited over an hour for a salad after I ordered it. WOW, PATHETIC. If you go there on wing night they have signs on the table telling you that you may have to wait over an hour to receive you're food... they aren't lying, even on slow nights you'll wait forever so you better enjoy watching sports.
This is a glorified Hooters. The food (especially the pizza) is pretty bland. You'll pay about $3.50 for a pint of Lager, too. The food is about 10x better at Home Delivery Pizza Pub across town, and you'll pay about half the price for a pint of Yuengling there, too!
Sure, Champs is a step up from Applebees or Fridays, but you can easily go to Home D (in State College or Bellefonte) and have a better experience. Bonfattos in Bellefonte is better, as well.
Edit: Some of these reviews are a JOKE. It looks like they're written by staff or management. I've been to their pay per view events and more than once our seats were given away (even when we got there early) or we were put RIGHT UNDERNEATH monitors. Prime seats were always given to other folks.
The wait staff thinks they deserve a big tip simply for recognizing you. If you don't schmooze the waitresses, you won't be served as frequently or as promptly as others who do. Like I said, it's a glorified HOOTERS.
I can't say enough GREAT things about CHAMPS! I go there for the pay-per-views and the big screen is the best for watching them. The food is good, the atmosphere is neat, the place is ALWAYS very clean and service and hospitality is TOP-NOTCH! I want to COMMEND the employees there for doing such a GREAT job and DEFINITELY the manager,VIC for making a night out such a WONDERFUL experience!!
Champs is one of the great places to eat in State College. The food is excellent, and the atmosphere is great. The pizza is fantastic (even delivered!). I had the Cuban Sandwich this week and it was the best I've had. I eat there every time I go back to Penn State, and I am never disappointed.
I am from Texas and in State College for business. We are working at the University and one of the locals suggested that me and a few buddies go to Champs on Atherton Street. We came here our first night to go to the bar and have come back every night since. A great atmosphere with a GREAT beer selection. We will definately be back next time we are in PA!
