Herwig's is some of the best freshly prepared food you can find in State College. The selection varies every day depending on what the chefs make, and popular menu items run out quickly. If you see a dessert you really must have when you start dinner tell them so they can reserve it for you. It's a family operation with Dad and Son as chefs and Mom making the pastries. Be prepared for an Austrian pronunciation lesson when ordering. The staff is very outgoing and fun for conversation. And be prepared to argue for a take home box.
I was only to Herwig's one time over my birthday weekend. I was never to an Austrian Resturaunt before so my finacee and I decided to go. It is counter style ordering, but the food is brought to you at your table. The platters are HUGE but the value is decent for what you pay. However, be prepared to eat. There is a little rule that if you do not eat everything on your plate you are spanked by a paddle, made to clean up among a few other things. I however did not eat everything on my plate and nothing happened. If you are a light eater, this place is not for you. My fiancee loved it and cant wait for us to go back.
The food is a lot of meat, sauerkraut, and dumplings. Traditional Austrian food. But do not say this food is like German food because they are totally different countries.
