Just had a very disappointing experience at Spaghetti Benders. I have gone to this restaurant numerous times in the past, but this was my LAST VISIT. I have never been impressed with their food, but used to be able to overlook the dark dingy atmosphere and extremely slow service when my kids wanted to go there for spaghetti. Tonight, however, I realized how cheap the owner is! We had ordered their nightly special of a spaghettini with mushrooms which included a salad and bread for $5.99...a great price, right? WRONG! I had asked if I could have their creamy marinara sauce which in their menu states to add $1.00. When our bill came, I was astounded. Since I had changed the sauce on the special, they cancelled the special and upcharged me for each item. I expected the sauce upcharge, but not the upcharge for the mushrooms (which were supposed to be on the special anyway) and for the salad (also supposedly included with the special). We were there with our four small children who each got a $2.00-$3.00 kids meal, 4 of us drank water, and our bill came to over $54.00! I was astounded. When I questioned the prices, the waitress just stated that there is a 20% gratuity of parties of 6 or more. We are a family of 6, but our gratuity at the restaurants in Disney World isn't even quite at 20%. My husband and I enjoy going out to eat and usually do spend over $50 when we take out our family, and we always tip well, but I certainly wasn't expecting to pay that for our $2, $3, and $6 meals in a dumpy, sub-standard restaurant! The final straw was when the manager/owner, Tony, came out to try to explain all the hidden upcharges, he was DRUNK and dressed like a SLOB. He would not adjust our bill and stated he has never had a complaint about the upcharges before (yet I've seen multiple compaints on other websites). We vowed to never return. CUSTOMERS BEWARE!! Not worthy of our patronage.
Well… I have been to Spaghetti Benders several times and enjoy the patio and the wait staff. The food is average for authentic Italian, but for Indiana, PA it ranks… well it’s still average regardless. The ambiance is below average inside- very dated and dingy, but as I said if the weather is nice, the patio is the way to go… BUT let’s get to the point- today I went in and this is the FIRST time I have met the owner TONY. In all my trips this is the first time… and why this time you ask? Because I wasn’t there to eat and I specifically asked to speak with the owner. First off, he doesn’t present well as all, even as a bus boy. Second, I was there to ask for a donation of a gift certificate to raffle off to earn scholarship money for a program I am involved in. Now I come from a PR/Marketing background and know the whole point of a donated gift certificate is to have more business come to YOU- get YOUR name out there and attach it to a good cause. Is this what Tony did? NO. He told me IF I come in and bring family or friends with me and THEN he would give me a gift certificate to donate? So, in conclusion, I bring YOU business for YOU to donate a gift certificate? So I am paying you (via buying dinners at YOUR restaurant) for YOU to donate a gift certificate to raise money for a cause? Hmmm…I definitely have never heard of this business tactic, doesn’t sound like a donation to me. I might as well buy a g.c. myself to donate! Will I continue to go to dinner at this restaurant, probably, only because I don’t always feel like driving into Pittsburgh for dinner and there are very few places to go in Indiana, PA! (I even complimented him on the place- ugh!)
I'm surprised by all the negative comments below. It's true that the wait is a bit long on occasion - but who minds waiting for good food when you're in good company? You go out to dinner to catch up or connect with people you like - if you want something quick with kids - hit up McDonald's. Drinks and salad is always out fairly fast - along with the endless free bread. The side salad is amazing, as long as all the food I've tried there. Also - the chef will come out and talk to you and do his best to make anything you want that's not on the menu. The bartender is very nice - and makes great drinks. The Tony spoken of below, surely can not be Tony the owner that I see every time I am there. He is friendly, polite, and always does his best to make sure you have everything you need. Overall I would say the food is delicious and CHEAP. I admit I've had experienced sub-par wait staff there but I've also had very good waitresses many, many times. In my opinion it's the best food for your money anywhere is Indiana. I'm ordering take out from there tonight - and I just had dinner there last night. Cheaper than Sheetz - better than Benjamin's.
husband and i here at around 3 in the afternoon we each had prime rib very tasty cooked as we ask for, vegetables and spaghetti that came with was done perfectly, had salads and garlic bread included in the price. we each had one drink from the bar which were fine. Older looking building but clean, restrooms too. waiter was very nice but it seemed he was doing double duty he also was behind the bar by what i could tell at least he was out at the bar? cheesecake was the closet to ny cheese cake we have gotten in the area. price for what we got was normal to the area. I would recommend this establishment to others. Only bad thing was the husband wanted a king prime rib and they had none poor boy had to settle for a queen and part of mine.
We have only been there a few times. The host (Tony) was always in a great mood. He was always around and making sure everything was OK. The same with our servers. Each time we were there, the servers were always available. Our food was never served cold. In fact, all of the food we ordered was truly home made and served to perfection. I am of Italian heritage and the food here reminds me of Sunday Dinners and my Grandmother's house. I highly recomend the Mussles, Cheese Stuffed Meatballs, and the Meat Ravioli.
I tell u what i will never ever go back there again. First of all the food was cold and undercooked and took forever to get there. Second i watched the owner Tony get up out of his seat behind the bar after smoking cigarettes and taking out trash not was his hands and went behind counter and started touching food that he was making. I heard from several people that ate there they witnessed it before. Another thing was the owner was so drunk behind the bar that when he came out to help his cooks he staagered the whole time and could barely make any sense. Last, my family went to pay at the register and guess who was there, tony. Oh god what a mess!! He couldnt even count the money right. I couldnt understand a word he mutterd. So this is a fare warning how lowsy the food is there and the circus that goes on while u try to dine out!
