Fortuna's Restaurant

Description

This restaurant in Niagara's Little Italy, has been pleasing palates since 1945. The third generation of the Fortuna family now runs the restaurant, and they continue the tradition of using the freshest ingredients possible. A faithful clientele guarantees they're definitely doing something right. Main courses include handmade gnocchi, ravioli, steaks, veal, poultry, and fresh seafood. Don't ask about the salad dressings and sauces, as they are closely guarded secrets. Nearby attractions include the Falls , Niagara Falls State Park , and Niagara Aerospace Museum.

Where do I start? With the waitress who we apparently inconvenienced by being seated in her section? The attitude did not improve, rude, rude and more rude. Or should I start with the large, loud, obnoxious waitress that stood at our shoulder, having a horribly personal conversation with her drunken friends seated next to us. We couldn't hear our own conversation over hers.........and no, waitress "lady", I do not want to hear about your little Vinney and little Angela, and their latest antics.........we don't care about your life, we are just trying to have a nice meal and a conversation of our own! Needless to say the small tables are far too close together. Asking for pasta not be drowned in sauce, is apparently NOT possible, as my gnocchi was overcooked and inedible and came slathered in a tasteless sea of red stuff, that you call sauce? HA! Try the COMO if you want nice sauce. When they describe the atmosphere as "romantic", please interpret that to mean that you are not going to have a good meal experince, and at those prices, you will feel TOTALLY SCREWED when they hand you the bill. I WOULD NEVER EVER RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT -- it deserves to be closed. If I could have left zero stars, as a rating, I would have. AVOID **** AVOID **** AVOID

It had been a while since I visited Fortuna’s, but not long enough. The service was mediocre. The chicken cacciatore seemed like something improvised by a fast food restaurant, the sauce was terrible. The gnocchi were over cooked and again the sauce was awful. The woman I was with also had a salad. You would think that they would get this right, but no. Chunks of lettuce thrown on a plate smothered in dressing and the bottom end of a tomato. I did have a soup that was ok. They are expensive for the poor quality. Stay away.

I can't believe they call themselves an Italian restaurant! What Italian restaurant uses "sub cheese" on chicken parm? For those of you that don't know what "sub cheese" is, it's a very cheap cheese made with a blend of American & Swiss cheeses. You can get mozz. on the chicken parm., if you ask for it. AND you can get mozz. on your salad if, again, you ask for it. But you wouldn't know it was available unless the waitress tells you or you read the fine print on the menu! Our waitress failed to tell us anything, not even the specials. I only knew all this later on because I heard all the other waitresses telling their tables. Our waitress was too busy worrying about the table behind us because it was their anniversary and she knew the people because she sat down with them instead of taking care of her tables! We ordered an appetizer which she never brought out; when she brought us our dinners, we told her and she said, "oh the cook must have forgotten to make it, do you still want it?" we did and the toast was burnt (garlic toast w/ cheese (but not the sub cheese!). Needless to say, I didn't eat my chicken parm because that "sub cheese" was disgusting - she told me, "she couldn't take it off the bill and handed us a $15 coupon to use by the end of May - that went in the garbage and so did my dinner. By the way, a table of 3 was seated 10 -15 min. after us and they were served their salads before us because the waitress, again, was getting the anniversary table together. So if you go there, be sure to do your homework and DON'T GET THE SUB CHEESE! And they call themselves Italians!!!!!!!!!!! And lastly, don't sit in the last table by the windows, it's next to the waitress station and you can't enjoy yourselves because they stand & talk.

Many fond memories. I was born & raised in NF going to "The Deluxe" when you could buy their sauce by the quart. It was such a neighborhood place. Altho I moved from NF in 1969, I go to Fortuna's whenever I return to the area. Have never been disappointed. My daughter still remembers the bread (from DiCamillos) she had there about 20 years ago. Altho the decor is completely different and upscale, I find the food as wonderful as ever.

Recently ate at Fortunas. Very, very dissapointed. Made reservations, when arrived, name was not on list.Waitress took the order, did not write anything down, thats ok, we both orderd the same meal. But, we did not get our apitizer. When I asked the waitres about, not writing down the order, she started to argue with me, BIG mistake. No one of any importance wanted to talk to me about the problem....... Will not go back,Will not recomend, In fact I "will recomend" to anyone not to go here !!!

I finally (after 40 years!) went back to Fortuna's Deluxe restaurant in Niagara Falls. It was my favorite treat as a child. I was so looking forward to it. My mom and cousin were with me as well, all with the same warm memories. The waitress recommended the eggplant parmesan to me. It was so bad, I couldn't finish it. I also ordered a pop (soda). There was approximately 3 oz of liquid at $1.75 with no free refills. I asked for a salad with Italian dressing & crumbly blue cheese. My cousin suspected that the blue cheese (like in the OLD days) would be an extra cost. It was. Two dollars (!!!) more. Such a disappointment. We definitely won't be back.

I ordered the veal parmesan which was good (not exceptional) but didn't come with much spaghetti. Wife ordered the sword fish which was a mistake. The dish came out dry and tough, way over cooked. We sent it back and waited a long time until they sent out a piece that was not cooked all the way through. My wife watched our party eat and she had her salad and small side dish of pasta. When the bill came they only took $10 of the $24 off for the meal. When questioned the owner (who was there and did not talk to us) said through the waiteress because my wife ate the salad, pasta, and had to cook the swordfish he was only taking $10 off. I asked the watress to tell the owner to shove the swordfish up his axx. I left my comments with my phone number on the bill, no response to date. Needless to say, we won't be back and by the lack of patrons for a Saturday night I am guessing many are feeling the same way. They are in business by reputation only.

Server was very casual, more like you would expect in a family restaurant, but prompt and quite thorough. Atmosphere was classic Italian - no candles or checkered tablecloths, but intimate and romantic. Food was absolutely fantastic. We shared a special beet salad, which was delicious. She had the Fettuccini Alfredo appetizer as her entrée, which was much more than adequate. I had Veal Parmigiana, which was wonderful! The cannoli for desert was the best! We recently ate at Angelo's Fairmount Tavern in Atlantic City, and the food here was better! The only negatives are the tables are a little close together and the men’s room is upstairs. Lunch is served only on Fridays and Sundays.

recommended by tour guide as passing through town. Almost didn't go due to unfavorable reviews. It was excellent. Fine food, great service. Very attractive decor.
