This restaurant, located inside of a former coal silo at the water's edge, has one of the best views in Lewiston. Eat lunch, dinner or ice cream in covered outdoor seating while gazing at the Lower Niagara River. The restaurant opened in April 1998 in the silo, which had stood vacant for over 55 years. Menu items include typical summer fare, like burgers, Italian sausage and hot dogs. Their signature sandwich, the Silo Haystack, is a rib eye steak topped with melted mozzarella and crispy shredded hash browns. You can also get beef on weck, fish and chips, pulled pork sandwiches and chicken fingers. Sides include sweet potato fries, served with honey on the side, onion rings, cheese fries and chili cheese fries. - Christine A. Smyczynski
I live in lewiston and the silo is hands down the best dinning atmosphere in town. You can walk in and order great quality food with the convenience of fast food surrounded by the quaint scenery of the lower niagara river gorge. The employees are so welcoming you forget you are'nt at a full service restaurant. After i moved into town seven years ago i've had nothing but great experiences.
I completely disagree with the previous two reviews. I have never had to wait an unreasonably long time for food. My favorite dish is their Haystack; steak on a hoagie roll with mayo and mozzarella. I go there regularly when they are open, and have never gotten cold food or waited too long. The view from the Silo is spectacular, and the service is always great. The caboose addition this past summer was great, it seemed a lot less crowded in the actual Silo. Overall a fantastic place to eat with great food and great service! 5 stars!
I agree 100% with the review written by tonajim. The Silo is a nice place, but the service is painfully slow. It's like they hire a bunch of kids from the area who don't know how to hustle. And that's not just when its busy, it can be slow in there & you still have to wait for your food. Could stand the prices if the service was better.
I went to the Silo at 2:30pm on Monday June 21, 2010. I must say I was extremely disappointed. I waited over 25 minutes for 3 hotdogs and 3 fries and the order was wrong when I finally got it. To cap off this experience, the food was ice cold. Not like it was busy! What will they do when they get crowded on a weekend? They say they beat Old Man Rivers and Mississippi Muds, but the only comparison is the high price. At least the other two restaurants can serve hot food. I won't eat here again, For the $18 I spent, I can get hot food and better tastoing food elswhere.
I had the pleasure of experiencing The Silo Restaurant for the first time ever after living 12 years in Niagara Falls, N.Y. To read about the historical back ground was truly interesting. The Silo opened as a restaurant in 1998, after it was condemned for 55 years. The Silo sits on the the water, where the view is breath taking from all angles. We came at the time where they were releasing young salmon hatchlings into the river. At this time you could see people sitting right on the dock fishing or relaxing. The atmosphere was truly tranquil at best. Away from bustling tourists and the sounds of construction or loud sounds of any kind. This is in historic Lewiston. What more would expect right? We walk into The Silo restaurant anxiously awaiting to place our order because the food does not smell like a fast food restaurant, As we are waiting you can look and see the inside was from and actual silo. But it was reconstructed to be a restaurant. Our cashier that took our order was all smiles and suggest some of their favorite specials. One of the specials was the Silo Haystack. Which consists of rib-eye steak, melted mozzarella cheese, and crispy hash-browns. Even though that sounded really good I just wanted a good flame broiled burger with bacon, Swiss cheese and mushrooms and all the topping. I have to admit the view was amazing, but the food was tremendous. With ice cream for dessert it really topped the after noon off!
