My family went here this past Sat and it was horrible. It was dark and the atmosphere was cold and unfriendly. The owner is said to be miserable which might explain the sour look on all the server s faces. Our waiter was a nice young man but was very jumpy making us uncomfortable. He was rushing us through our meal. They had a accordian player that was very enjoyable and we wanted to relax and enjoy the music but we felt we needed to eat and run. Our meal was nothing better then you would get at a chain like TGIF.
I was hoping this place had improved being it was under new Management. However, it has gotten worse! Same incompetent staff and the food no longer tastes homemade. Everything seems to be straight out of a can or microwaved. Having high blood pressure I need to watch my salt intake so they should give a warning about the high sodium levels in their prepared foods. The soup tasted like they dropped a entire bag of salt in it by mistake. Our waitress was straight out of a diner with a white rag hanging out of her apron and straws in her pocket. I get the impression that are trying to be Upscale but it comes off as laughable. We asked the young busgirl for bread 3 times yet our requests were ignored. She was too busy flirting and hugging the young busboy in the corner. Our waitress ended up bringing us the rock hard bread and frozen butter. The sauerbraten which used to be pretty good lacked the sourness and flavor. Dessert was a bite size piece of store bought pound cake. The best improvement they could make is getting a new Chef. You can overlook poor service if the food is decent enough.
The food is very good, especially the Beef Goulash. I enjoyed the atmosphere and am thinking of having a birthday celebration in the party room. I sat in the dining room, and our waitress was very nice. I suggest trying it for yourself.
I have to agree with some of the bad reviews here. It shocks me this place is still in business. When you compare this place to most of the competition it doesn t measure up. They try to fill you up with cheap appetizers like watery cole slaw and salty soup to distract from microwaved dinners. Everything you eat is loaded with fat and calories which explains why the majority of patrons belong on the Biggest Loser. Our waiter had his head in the clouds. He was extremely slow. He was nice just not very efficent. At one point in the meal I went through the bar on my way to the restroom and the Chef came out of the kitchen looked right at me and looked away.No smile or hello. Very unfriendly .To top this dinner off we had cold coffee and carrot cake that tasted like it was from Walmart and freezer burnt ice cream. The waiter suggested Black Forest cake and my son ordered a slice but the waiter failed to mention it was not included in the meal
Everytime I drive passed here on my way home the parking lot is empty. We thought they closed down. Recently, on a Sat night on our way shopping we actually saw a few cars in the parking lot so we stopped in. There was a bit of a wait even though it was not overally busy. They were short staffed so we had to wait at the bar for about 20 minutes.Looking around It seems they changed some things, new tablecloths, decorations, etc yet the it still needs sprucing up. They are trying to distract from the food, I guess or make it more Upscale as they serve cheap $25 dinners in slummy Highland Mills. The bartender was very friendly and made us a delicious cosmo .After we were seated it took 15 minutes for a waitress to take our order. . The table next to us was waiting almost as long and all of a sudden the busboy was taking their drink and food order before we even got water or bread.. How unprofessional to have someone go from clearing your dirty plates to serving you dinner. Our waitress finally came over and she was very lovely but rushed. They were introducing a new Italian style menu which is odd for a German Restaurant. We ordered off the German part of the menu, as you do in a German restaurant. We started with German pototae pancakes which needed to be cut with a steak knife they were so tough. The waitress did suggest the escargot so we gave it a try and it was very chewy and the sauce was tasteless. It was not prepared correctly. My husband had the Wurst platter and it was horrible. It looked and tasted rancid. Stale food on a Sat night, the biggest night of the week? The spaetzle was a little to oily for my liking but overal not bad and the red cabbage had a funny odor to it (as did the cole slaw). The rahm schnitzel was very tough and not tender like it should be and was still frozen in the middle. They should of spent money on a new Chef instead of new linen on the tables or maybe a few more staff so you get service. We passed on dessert. The choices didn t sound that great. They advertise for 4-5 course dinner and they don t serve Black Forest cake anymore, just ice cream or sherbert. We left unsatisfied and will never return
Not a bad place but it definitely used to be better. We went here en route to West Point with a party of 6. This isn't sophisticated, authentic German food so don't expect fancy or high class. Very casual. I always order the same dish, chicken schnitzel, so I can't really compare it to the other dishes. However, it was a much smaller portion and the sides were blah. My son had the duck and he said it was overcooked. Most of us at our table were disappointed. It's a shame when a place has so much potential but falls flat. There is an air of tension in the place too. It's not the same friendly atmosphere.
The food is not the same as it used to be. The Chef is approaching 100 so he's losing his touch! I have to agree with some of the other reviewers when they mentioned the staff being yelled at in front of customers. I have heard the owner is not easy to work for and they seem to have a lot of turnover. The food is OKAY. Not the best and not the worst. It used to be very good. Some of our food did not taste fresh. Our waiter was extremely slow and not very good. We saw more of the busboy then we did our waiter. Next time I visit the area I will check out a different German Rest.
