Frankie & Johnnie's Steakhouse

Description

This classic steakhouse first opened in 1926. Working quietly against prohibition, it supplied the illicit cravings of numerous alcohol lovers of the time. While that era of American history is long gone, Frankie and Johnnie's does not appear to have changed very much since then. Big steaks, chicken and fish are what it does best, particularly the T-bone Steak. Why go here when there are so many other top quality steakhouses in the city? Because it has character, charm and more meat than you can possibly hope to eat in one sitting.

My girlfriend and I visited the city the weekend of July 4, 2010, to catch a great dinner and a show. We chose Frankie & Johnnie's because it was located so close to our venue (Brooks Atkinson Theater) and our hotel (Millenium Broadway). We could not have been more pleased with our choice. The atmosphere was intimate, the service extremely professional, and the food spectacular. I, like everyone else, recommend the Ribeye to steak lovers. From the salads to the perfect after-dinner cappuccino, everything tasted delicious. For a meal and service of this caliber in the Theater District on NYC, the value was exceptional as well. I would recommend it without reservation. Perhaps the only caution I would advise is that it is a second floor dining room. I did not check to see if there was an elevator for elderly patrons.

We are from Texas, so we know a good steak. Most of the men at our table ordered the t-bone steak and enjoyed it. I ordered the rib eye and was content. I do have to say that my friend likes her steak well done and it came out hard and burned. Anyway, contrary to our server's suggestion, the side orders are very small to share with several people. I did appreciate the manager's help to get a complimentary limo ride to our Broadway show. Unfortunately, the limo driver was late. But the manager worked it out and we were driven by another driver in a car.

Group Dissapointment
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/19/06
Saturday night, December 16th our party of three men, two women and a child of 12 were expecting a treat as my son who was with us just raved about F&J's in Hoboken. The 12 year old and I had pork chops which were dry and flavorless( perhaps reheated?). My wife had a sirloin, medium rare, for which I traded my porkchops and I could not chew the meat. My friend's sirloin, medium well had a tendon throughout and he said was not good as did my son. The potatoes were poor as was the spinach which was mush. A worker kept opening a door behind us, letting in a cold breeze, taking out and putting in a chair. The drinks, rum and coke, and apple martinis were very good as were the oysters. I had the feeling that since we called at the last minute F&J figured we were just tourists and tihs would probably be the only time we would visit so the could give us any old leftovers.

worth every penny
By kents, 10/27/06
The steaks were great and the service was just as great. The waiter was a character and made the whole evening fun. can't wait to go back next year when we're in NYC. We walked in on a Friday night and got seated right away. I've eaten at the best Steakhouses in St. Louis and Chicago, this is as good as any of them and the wait staff is alot more fun...They make the evening an experience..

Some nice touches
By William, 5/15/06
Average for a premium steakhouse. I liked that when I ordered a top shelf scotch, the waitress knew the selection and it was served correctly. The steak was definitely aged and seared, cooked perfectly. However, several of the side dishes were out and we were not informed until we tried to order them. Same thing with the appetizer we wanted. Nice romantic atmosphere though, and we were seated away from others in the restaurant without having to ask. Had a great time with the date. Average as far as experience and value.

It's ok
By chris, 5/5/06
I've been to all of the best Steak Houses. I have my opinions of all of them. This one is no different. It's ok. I wouldn't say it was an awesome but just average. Luger's - the wait is too long even with reservations. I would say Mortons and Ruther Chris (NJ Weehawken) are the best so far for me.

Get the Sirloin!
Well let me tell you all that I can't wait to go back and check out some more of their great food. My friends told me about this place and they were absolutely right about how awesome their sirloin was. It's absolutely wonderful! Steak was cooked to perfection, my friend couldn't stop raving about the burger she had, along with their delicious fries! Please check out this place if you're in the neighborhood! I'm sure you won't be disappointed!

Delicious
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/29/05
The atmospehere is great-- along with the friendly service, which also is quick as can be. I went with my family, and we ordered the Porterhouse, which is made to perfection, along with the salmon (which is great for all you fish lovers out there). All in all, I had a wonderful experience at Frankie and Johhnie's and cannot wait to come back.
