Sofias Ristorante Italiano
If you are craving for some authentic Italian food, then Sofia's is a good bet. A moderately priced restaurant, this is an ideal place to have a drink or a quick bite before a Broadway show. The cuisine is mostly Northern Italian however, you might find a few surprises from the South also. Service is fast, but you may have to wait for a table if you go during the pre-show rush.
Audiences of the Hit Off-Broadway show, My Sinatra, can enjoy a delicious prix-fixe meal of Italian fare upstairs in the restaurant, before or after the performance, as part of their ticket price: $105 premium and $85 general admission.
The “devil-may-care,” style and incomparable charm of Frank Sinatra surge through the microphone once again at Cary Hoffman’s “riveting” show, My Sinatra. This one man musical explores the sometimes strange, frequently hilarious, and always interesting life of Hoffman himself; A Sinatra idolizer with an unparalleled ability to channel the voice of Ol’ Blue Eyes. Throughout My Sinatra, Hoffman interweaves his personal tale of musical obsession with the star, telling his own hard to believe larger-than-life story, highlighting it with “mesmerizing” (The LA Times) performances of Sinatra’s greatest hits.
The food was so so but the service was
horrendous. Our waiter took our order, it was delivered by busboy or whoever, never saw
our waiter until after we ate. Tried to order a second glass of wine but never saw our waiter so asked busboy. Well of course never got it and when finally saw our waiter he said don't ask the busboy because he doesn't understand English. Well where the hell was the waiter all this time maybe stuffing his face in the kitchen. Our water glasses were never refilled. My coffee cup was taken away and was never offered a second cup of coffee. I would never go back there. It was the first time in my life I didn't even want to leave a tip.
Three of us went to the theater last night and got into the city early. Decided to look for a place to eat, we found Sophia's purely by accident. Upon walking into the restaurant we were greated pleasantly and the aromas were extremely inviting. We were sat right away and waited no time for someone to come take our drink orders. The waitstaff were very accomodating and they even occaisionaly joked around with us. The food wazs delicious as were the desserts. It was a wonderful beginning to a fun evening, despite the torrential downpour.
Bravo Sophia's....I will definitely be back! With friends!
My husband and I went to Sofia's on 11/18/08 before going to a show. At first, I was excited to try the food, but shortly after receiving our appetizers, I was terribly disappointed. The fresh mozzarella consisted of 3 sliced of cheese that were at least a few days old. The carpacio had a weird taste to it. My entree(Paparadelle Porcini) was so salty that it burned my throat. I thought maybe it was me, but when hubby tasted it he couldn't believe it. It was inedible. His veal was extremely bland. I made mention to the wait staff, who was less than accomodating and he really didn't seem to care. Almost as if he was used to it. Sadly, our dinner expectations went up in flames, but the show was a hit. I would not recommend trying this place.
The service was slowest I have ever experienced in a New York City restaurant.
In addition our waiter never told us what the daily specials were.
The food was far to salty. Only good thing was the capuccino was good and hot and the Tartufo tasty.
Would I go back |? No.
Did Sofia's change hands since the last reviewers? We asked for dipping olive oil instead of butter and we got the oil & vingegar containers that they use for salads. Oil was obviously old and bland. They tried taking my wife's salad (mostly iceberg) away before she was done, even though we were not eating slowly. They did take my dish away with a few bites left, but I really didn't want the rest anyway. Pasta dishes were just average, although our friends' chicken dish was good. Men's room had no hot water or soap, and I told the maitre d', but he couldn't care less. The four of us our not hard to please or demanding, but we will not go back or recommend it to anyone. We get to NYC at least twice a month and usually have a good experience.
