Before going to a play in the Theater District, many people like to dine at a popular and moderately priced restaurant in the area. Joe Allen meets the purpose as the food and service are always dependable and it is a good spot to grab a quick meal before rushing on to catch your show. Brick walls and checkered tablecloths give the restaurant a casual and comfortable ambiance. The Caesar salad and black bean soup are popular and main courses as the La Scala Salad (with diced salami), sauteed sole with capers, and salmon with angel hair and pesto are satiating. Cheesecake is a favorite for dessert.
This is place is great. If you are going to the theatre you must eat here.Great food too! Make reservations though (one week in advance). Check out the Flop Wall with some of Broadway's biggest disasters- I've seen some of them!
We'd heard of this place on Rosie O'Donnell's talk show and decided to try it. We had no reservations but were seated right away after a show and just 3 tables down from Chita Rivera! We also saw Dame Judi Densch, or, at least were 90 percent sure we did.
It was a very casual place and the food was very well priced and very good! It's a great place for desserts and I've been back for dinner twice. I'm going to NY again in June and taking my cousin (a 1st timer to NY) to this restaurant for dinner before we see Wicked. I loved the people there- the waitstaff was very sweet. Overall, one of the best eating experiences in my 7 trips to NY!
Having been to it's namesake in London a number of times it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I approached the US equivelent. Within moments of arriving however I was happy that the same high standards were being maintained in both service and food. If you are seeing a show or are just in town and you just fancy a great place to eat this should be high on your list.
