I was only at the restaurant once for a retirement dinner and the food was fine but everyone is missing the point. This place was created during the depression and gave magic and beauty during the hard times Americans were experiencing. It was created as a Land of Oz and I am bringing my children today for lunch because this will be the last time we will ever experience such an iconic and fantasy themed restaurant. I am truly disgusted by the city who would take away the license of the true owners of the restaurant, people who worked hard for 75 years making this the most famous restaurant in the world. This is an example of how typical and how greedy this world has become. Everything goes to the highest bidder. Mayor Michael Bloomberg where is your sense of loyalty to the hard working owners of Tavern on the Green and your responsibility to the 400 unionized employees at this restaurant. How dare you bid their lives away. I am holding you personally responsible for these employees lives. I want you to ensure these employees have jobs to go to tomorrow. Your love of money came before your sense of loyalty and sense of doing the right thing by trying to help this restaurant out. So what they had a bad year, hasn't everyone in America. This was your chance to step up and give a helping hand to the true owners of this restaurant. It is time for Americans to start doing the right thing. Please do not go to the new restaurant when it opens and reward this awful and low handed business behavior.

Utterly disappointing. Given, my boyfriend and I went there just days before they are closing their doors; maybe this played a factor in the awful service we received. We sat for 15 minutes waiting for a server to come by to take our order, and even when he eventually did, we received no introduction or greeting, just a "have you decided?" Our order was messed up, twice, between the appetizer and entree, and the food was simply OK. In addition, the seating situation was awful. We arrived at 4:40 for a 5:00 reservation, and were told to stand nearby because seating would begin in 10 minutes. After 20 minutes went by, I went back up to the host stand, cutting in front of dozens because I was not waiting in line again, only to be given a card and directed to the dining room. Why didn't this happen the first time?!?! Also, while waiting, we attempted to walk upstairs to the bar, and on our walk to the bar we were literally shooed away by a staff member, for reasons we didn't understand. I will admit the atmosphere is magnificent, but the service completely ruined the entire experience for me.

Green Cafe is great for lunch!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/6/09
Green Cafe is awesome! Our firm always orders lunch here. They have a ton of options including sandwhiches, paninis and a salad bar with tons of options. They deliver very quickly and the food is not expensive by NY standards.

Truly unimpressive. We had dinner here a few weeks before Christmas and the decor was the first appalling attribute. It was as if we were transported to 1978 and the elves had established a bizarre disco at the North Pole. The table we were seated at was small and the chairs were only a step above folding card table chairs. Our "server" was an older gentleman with a mysterious international accent who arrogantly demanded to know our order and did not even bother to offer drinks or appetizers. Never once did he inquire about our satisfaction with the food nor did he ever offer to refresh our drinks or ask us if we needed anything else. This place is just a name. The prime rib was average. Don't waste your time or money. This was my first and last time to Tavern on the Green.

What a disapointment!!! To start, the coat check girls were annoyed we didn't get our coats off fast enough and rolled their eyes at us... beautiful room we dined in. ..however the waiter came to take our orders and never asked if we wanted "drinks". We had appetizers, I had eaten half of my salad and he asked if he could take the dish, when I said I wasn't done I must have annoyed him so when the meals came he asked if I wanted the empty salad dish to stay on the table?? To further "teach me a lesson" he served 3 meals then... and mine 5 minutes later!!! Our waters were never refilled and the empty beer bottles were left on the table. We are not hard to please but what a disappointment Tavern on the Green was. Average food and pompous arrogant wait staff. We tipped because we always do, but he really didn't deserve it.

I was there 12/05/08 and was with a group of 9 women. Rude comments were made to us as we walked in, made us feel like cattle being rushed in. Dining room lacked any sort of class - tacky holiday decorations, outdated furniture. The food is over priced for what it is & the food did not come out hot. For the price & the name, I was extremely disappointed. It totally lacks any resemblence of class & style that it should have being a restaurant of that nature. There was a wedding reception being held in a room next to our dining room & we could hear rap/hip hop music playing while we were trying to have a nice dinner - totally ruined the atmosphere. Wouldn't recommend to anyone!

Fading

The first thing that was a huge disappointment about this lovely place was the wait. We had reservations...no need to wait nearly an hour. Second, I love salt, but our dishes were so salted as to be unpalatable. I fear this restaurant is coasting on its reputation.

If you are looking for a good place for dinner, definitely not think of Tavern on the Green ..... Too expensive, the food is regular, and if you do not have the good fortune of having a table in the main hall, others are boring. Nothing recommended

This place is definitely a tourist trap. The food isn't bad, but lets just say its average at best. My appetizer was very tasty (orecchiette with broccoli rabe)...though what should have been a hot dish was lukewarm. My main course (grilled porkchop) was also tasty, but nothing special...diner quality. The service was medicre. One of my dining companions ordered medium rare and got well done....the wait staff disappeared after literally just dropping the food on the table and when we finally found one, there was no apology, rather a snotty attitude. Service was really medicre through the entire meal. The chocolate cake dessert was also average at best... and they dropped the check off with the dessert and after coming back 3 times within 10 minutes they asked us to pay so they could close out our section (it was only 1030!!!!). This place which should have a wonderful atmosphere felt more like a catering hall or even a cafeteria. Definitely a tourist trap. Satisfy your tastbuds elsewhere!
