Thanks to its reputation for serving huge, high quality sandwiches, tourists and locals flock here in droves. While there are better Jewish delis in New York City, the Stage has become a landmark that illustrates just how good quality deli food can be. Pastrami, corned beef, turkey and tongue sandwiches are specialties. While the sandwiches seem expensive, they are large enough to fill up most people for both lunch and dinner.
AWFUL- overpriced and dirty! the service was a joke, we were pushed to make a choice before we had a chance to view the menu... the food was all but thrown down on our table, (and it wasn't even good, very dry and the bread was stale.) if you had to use the restroom (2 stahls), you had to wait, once I got in, I come to find that the waitress is in there, chatting on her cell phone,, and the other waitress is vomiting all over the place.. which makes me wonder how many people's food she handled on her shift. Needless to say, I will NEVER be back. EVER!
Stay away! Overpriced, poorly staffed, and understocked. In other words, small portions, out of basic things like club bread, etc. Pastrami no better than supermarket packaged deli. Walk the extra half block to Carnegie Deli. If you can, go to Katz's on Houston. I'll never go back to Stage. It's aptly named. It's all an act. They put on a poor performance of a New York deli.
OK you want a real NY deli travel out to Hauppague or Melvile LI and go to BAGEL BIZ they are reasonably priced for NY they have the NYC feel and the food is amazing the selection is huge all kinds of salads sandwhiches and great catering they do backyard BBqs like no one else they rock in the summers out in the hamptons...
But what a great tourist experience. As a young businessman in New York from Dallas for my first time, I stumbled into Stage for a real Reuben sandwich. It ruined me for life. It may not be as authentic as Katz's, but Stage is still a great experience and great food. I always send friends there.
I have lived in NY all my life. Stage is an overrated over priced tourist trap. The food is served to you cold. You are hustled in and out. If you want real NY deli go to Katz's or the Third Ave Deli. Put an extra dollar in the tip cup and your sandwich will get much larger.
I eat at the Stage every few weeks. Best money spent on a meal in NYC. You can get a salad, sandwich or soup. It's all great. I have spent more money on lesser quality and size meals throughout the city for years. The Stage gives you the bang for your buck every time.
Been to the Stage and to Katz's. No contest, Katz's is the best. While the sandwiches at the Stage are indeed huge, they are in fact too huge to eat. I am all for a healthy sandwich and Katz's has the right balance of form and function. To me, the Stage is tourist stop, Katz's is a real New Yorkers deli.
Not impressed AT ALL. The bread was awful, dry and stale.
The pickels were soggy (which meant I was not even going to try to eat it)
I would not go back much less spend my money on an over-priced over-hyped sandwich
