In a city that is fast losing its distinct, New York neighborhood flavor and simple, elegant living, The Place is a drop of rain on the desert when it comes to fine, affordable dining, a credible and consistent kitchen, service that is warm, inviting and friendly, and the feeling one gets when revisiting a different time, era and station in life. As a regular customer and admirer of The Place, each new dining experience transcends the next one. The staff is always inviting and caring, treating its patrons like old, valued friends. The menu is not extensive, but therein lies the attraction. No matter what you order from this consistent, fine selection of appetizers, entrees and desserts, there cannot be an inferior meal that is served here. The chef focuses his flavorful, understated yet elegant talents on quality, freshness and customized portion control. Alex is the welcoming proprietor (by way of England), and his dedicated, hands-on style of management guarantees a thoroughly enjoyable dining experience, no matter the meal selection. The Place engenders memorable nights out and meeting new friends and acquaintances. Its customers are so friendly and interesting, from all stations in life. For example, when I last dined there on Thursday, September 15, 2005 at 9:00 p.m., I had just finished a delectably prepared entree of diver scallops and, given the late hour I decided to skip dessert. There was a large party of eight people seated next to me in the secluded back room. The gentleman diner seated directly across from me had instructed my waiter that dessert for me was being paid by their party! What a random act of human kindness. Since I was dining alone (a spontaneous decision), I can only imagine this kind man's party wanting to share their good fortune of friends and food with me, and I happily accepted their offer. That experience typifies the kind of evening The Place Rrestaurant embraces. It's a magical hideaway tucked away on a tree-lined block in the most quaint and historical part of Greenwich Village. Service, kindness and friendship like this will surely guarantee frequent return visits by me, my guests and extended family. Owner and operator Alex has recaptured the magic that can still be found on the fabled, storybook street that is universally recognized as West 4th in the Village. This Place has reaffirmed my faith in civilization and mankind. Encore!
