Nobu Next Door

Description

Nobu Next Door, which opened as an extension of the original Nobu, has now taken on a life of its own. Opened in 1998 due to high demand, its menu mirrors the original Nobu and offers Nobu To Go. With its late night dining and music, Nobu Next Door tends to draw a more spirited crowd. The restaurant satisfies those spontaneous diners who need the Nobu fix, but didn't plan ahead, by offering first come, first serve table seating between the hours of 7:00pm and 9:00pm. Nobu Next Door received a three star review from The New York Times. Designed by architect David Rockwell, Nobu Next Door evokes the Japanese seaside: Japanese fishing nets hang from the ceiling and a wall made of nori (Japanese seaweed) blankets the entrance. There is also a huge display of lit sake bottles--the classic accompaniment to Japanese food. The atmosphere buzzes with the same energy and excitement as Nobu yet definitely maintains an identity all its own.

actually had a very same experience as Hampy. At best this would be a very, very average sushi place - kind of that one might walk in if in a hurry during lunch in a city never visited before. Tartar appetizer was the only one worth mentioning. Most of the dishes were way too salty, size wise they were okay though. Quality wise, to my astonishment, sushi were really bad - stale very gamy fish, sashimi not much better. Ambiance - well, it's an eatery and not a chick one either. Very crowded space (try to get one of the booth tables on the window sides). If you end up sitting on the middle it is likely you'll be pumped into a few times by wait stuff or patrons... Don't think that the stuff was pompous though certainly they could have been more attentive for the price. Given choices of the really good downtown restaurants in NY this would be certainly not one of the places i'd ever suggest anyone to consider - one star...

We went to Nobu for lunch chef special. The fish tartar is amazing: my husband had the yellow tail and I had the tunar tartar. Both are equally awesome. The molten chocolate dessert is awesome as well. I rate the Sushi and Shrimp Tempura that we got as being average.

I was impressed with the food. I had only tried sushi one other time and didn't like it. However, everything I had at Nobu was very good. We were well attended to. It was a nice setting in a small restaurant and a good time.

Totally agree with the previous review. There is just absolutely no reason to pay high prices for bad sushi unless you just want to be in the presence of pompous wait staff and possible Hollywood star or two. Other than that, just go elsewhere and find your best neighborhood sushi bar. Nobu is overrated, full of hype and sushi so fishy you have to pinch your nose to eat it, if you can find it on your plate.

pricey
Very pricey meal, but you get what you pay for. The sushi is outstanding and the tempura is amazing, I would definitely go back. The service wasn't that friendly, but whatever, who cares, it was a great time.!

One of my better Japanese dining experiences. They have the best Tempura I've ever tasted. Worth every penny!

Extraordinary Sushi but,
By James, 7/6/07
I visited Nobu on June 15th while on a conference trip to New York City. I found the sushi incredible, but not how the employee's were treated. If not for that fact, I would absolutely visit Nobu again.

Over-rated
By Afshin, 7/6/07
Visited Nobu on Hudson St. with a friend recently. Though the ambience was nice, the prices were a bit disproportionate to what was being offered. We both had the Omikase with a bottle of sake, and our bill including tip was about $500. I would say no matter what the standard, that much money for two people to have dinner and drinks is a bit much.
