Pizza was nothing special to write home about and the service was really horrible. I think it is the NAME that brings-in the customers. There is nothing magnificent about the place and the crowds who wait 35 to 55 minutes outside are forced to like the pizza because, due to all that wait and hunger, any pizza tastes great - even cold pizza.
The best time to try this place out, if you should, is during off peak hours. On week-ends and holiday, out-of-towners to NYC throng this place. And this place can not handle all that crowding. There is no decent or proper seating and the service and food hits the dumps when many customers crowd Lombardi's.
You sure should try out this place for its names sake but only during off peak days. You might be better off if you stick to your own local pizza parlor in your town. You will save the time, money and the disappointments.
Bon Appetit.
