Jane is a casual American bistro located between Greenwich Village and Soho. Since April 2001, neighborhood regulars and destination diners alike flock to Jane for its value-priced brunch, lunch and dinner menus. Jane also serves as an ideal location for private events, from business dinners to baby showers. At Jane, the menu showcases an affinity for local ingredients with what New York magazine calls "cleverly tweaked but unpretentious American cuisine." To complement the food, Jane offers a hand-selected, extensive wine list and seasonally driven cocktails. Jane is the sister restaurant to The Smith East Village, The Smith Lincoln Center and The Smith Midtown.
my fiance and i both love jane. we've been there several times now and never been disappointed. the seared tuna is incredible.. the mushroom soup is delicious. beet & goat cheese salad is nice. we've tried several fish dishes and they're always fantastic... but the tuna takes the prize. for dessert, the chocolate cake is very good, but it's HUGE, so be prepared. the warm cookie is great, and i had a chocolate explosion type thing once that was incredible but i don't remember if it was a special or not.
I usually eat at the bar. The food is lovely. The servers couldn't be nicer. I've been there off-hours on many occasions, and the experience has always been pleasant. Jane's isn't a glitzy place, but comfortable and welcoming, unlike some of the trendier spots in the neighborhood. I should also add they're very kind to old ladies eating solo ( being one myself)!
I went to this place to celebrate my sister's acceptance into the college of her choice. The restaurant itself is very nice... the staff was attentive and polite... but the food basically sucked. We didn't even order anything elaborate. Actually the TWO things that were good were the seared scallop appetizer (yummy but very small) and the flavored iced teas. That's about it. Too bad... it looked like it had such promise. We were all sorely disappointed.
Although the food was good, I didn't like dealing with a waiter that was snobby and full of attitude. I'm sure not all of the staff is like that however, be prepared if you do go.
As for the food, I had an appetizer (Salmon & Avacado Tartare) and the Baby Arugula, Pear and Blue Cheese Salad. The salad was ok but I thought the appetizer was very good. One of my friends had the special, which was a soft shell crab entree and that was excellent. For NYC, the food was reasonably priced. I thought the decor of the place was very nice and it had a good ambiance. It's very modern without trying too hard to be super chic. It's close to a lot of bars so it would be a good place to eat dinner and then go out after.
