From breakfast to late dinner, you can slide into one of the blue leather booths here and enjoy cheap Cuban cuisine. Meals have excellent value with large portions of good hearty food. Try the Sandwich Cubano and other pressed sandwiches for a truly satisfying lunch. The cafe Habana is particularly famous as an eco-eatery for its ecologically-sound design and use of bio-degradable dinnerware. Its other locations in New York City and Brooklyn must also be visited.
(for Elizabeth location) I think I read in the menu that the original location is still in business in Mexico City. Anyway, who cares? :-) It's not as fancy as Dos Caminos, but the food is just as good, or even better. We sat at the bar, but the service was friendly and attentive. We had to wait a while for the main dish, but boy, was it worth the wait! I also love the variety of hot sauces, especially the habanero!
It's true the corn is pretty darn good. Probably the best I have ever tasted. As a matter of fact I would like to learn exactly how it's prepared so that I can make this dish at home. The restaraunt is cramped, but then again this is NYC living. Of the several times that I have eaten here, the service has been friendly and attentive. Your getting a tremendous value for your dollar, and unfortuntaley I fear that this hot spot risks becoming too popular and turning into a tourist destination. All in all I highly recommend you give it a try. Expect to spend about $15 per person depending on if you order alcholic drinks and what not.
What an absolutely charming and delightful place. It is one of those rare gems in New York that has remained the true integrity of downtown Manhattan. Words can not describe how absolutely joyous I find this little spot... The people, the food, the staff, the owners, all of it... Genius, simply genius.
