Great place to see/be seen with typical caveats
By ,
Decent food, decent prices until you deviate from the menu...they totaly capitalize on the fact that its glam patrons want salad instead of fries and charge $2. Staff is friendly at first, then dissapears. But hey, its a nice outdoor patio in a nice neighborhood and open all the time. TRY THE CHEESE GRITS!

I will always return!
By ,
The thing that I loved most was that I could get a meal at 4:30am after dancing all night. The first meal I had was the chicken and waffles - I fipped, and I was hooked! In those wee hours, I pledged that whenever I visited NYC I'd make it there by all means necessary. To my disappointment, upon my last visit in October 2004, my chicken and waffles were no longer on the menu! I had a blast regardless, because the ambience, my steak, and my friendly (and flirty) waiter had won me over completely! I left still holding true to my pledge of always returning, but filled out a request form to put chicken and waffles back on the menu, and hopefully - on my next visit - my dream just may come true.

The Formerly Hip
By ,
Ah, the tragedy of a place that used to be too kewl for itself (cf. the Peter Rauhofer disk released under its name a few yearss ago)! Cafeteria stays open 24 hours and always has beer on tap, both of which make it appealing. The service varies from attentive to lax to snooty, so one hardly knows what to expect.

Finally I got my first taste of quinoa. Didn't...

...like it but so what? There was so much more to like. The place is designed in some kinda contemporary, technophile versus luddite, minimalist fashion. I really liked this place. If you are h*m*phobic, this place may not be for you. lol. There are plenty of panty men serving as waiters here. This place reminded me of why I l*ve New York so much. Couldn't have so much diversity like this in N.C. I mean the multiplicity and diversity of interracial couples, cosmopolitan menu, some of the flyest house music-inspired MUZAK that I have ever heard and romantically-lit...what else can you ask for? Perfect way to conclude an evening!

Need Mac & Cheese at 4 AM?
By ,
In the vein of Coffee Shop, Cafeteria appeals to the post-club crowd looking for a bite at 3 AM. Coming here at primetime with no reservation, we got stuck downstairs, which is the equivalent of Siberia. The place to be is definitely upstairs, where you can appreciate the white-out decor. The food is billed as American comfort food, and incredibly enough, the southern staple chicken and waffles is on the menu. Comfort food and a stark post-modernist theme would seem to be at odds with one another, and they are. The dishes were lackluster, even the chicken & waffles and the vaunted mac & cheese food. The service is like the food: lackluster. Considering the place is packed pretty much at all hours, this can be forgiven to an extent. Like its compatriot Coffee Sop, Cafeteria would be hard to top stumbling home buzzed at 4 AM, but it's like many New York establishments that are all style and little substance. Just don't expect it to rock your world.

A great night-out in the city deserves a great place to dine and unwind and Cafeteria is the place to be. A classy 24 hour diner, the place is packed at 4 in the morning so dont be surprised if you have to wait 15-20 minutes. But once you are seated, you will be glad you waited as the menu is filled with delicious dishes. Its known for its Mac and Cheese, which once you try, you would want to have more. The tomato basil soup was perfect, and non-overbearing while the turkey burger just was great to satisfy an empty stomach.
