Need Mac & Cheese at 4 AM?
In the vein of Coffee Shop, Cafeteria appeals to the post-club crowd looking for a bite at 3 AM. Coming here at primetime with no reservation, we got stuck downstairs, which is the equivalent of Siberia. The place to be is definitely upstairs, where you can appreciate the white-out decor. The food is billed as American comfort food, and incredibly enough, the southern staple chicken and waffles is on the menu. Comfort food and a stark post-modernist theme would seem to be at odds with one another, and they are. The dishes were lackluster, even the chicken & waffles and the vaunted mac & cheese food. The service is like the food: lackluster. Considering the place is packed pretty much at all hours, this can be forgiven to an extent. Like its compatriot Coffee Sop, Cafeteria would be hard to top stumbling home buzzed at 4 AM, but it's like many New York establishments that are all style and little substance. Just don't expect it to rock your world.
