Very old school shore/seafood restaurant. The food was fair, nothing special or memorable, my husband felt sick the rest of the day after eating the flounder stuffed w/crabmeat for lunch. The prices were high for the quality of food. Needs updating, felt like I was back in the 60's or 70's. The Crab Claw Restaurant in Lavalette, NJ much, much better. Save your time and money, don't go to the Lobster Shanty in Tomes River.
Not recommended. As others have said, it looks like it might have been fancy a long time ago, but now it just looks dated. The service was fine, but the food was subpar, especially for the price. To top things off I was battling with a dying fly that kept landing on my plate as I was eating.
And to the reviewer who said she doesn't tip, you are pathetic.
For the prices on the menu the quality just was not there. I am a seafood lover and although the place was descent it is not deserving of 4 stars that yahoo gives it. I had the lobster bisque, blackened tuna bites and crab cakes. The waitstaff was very young and the decor about twenty years too late. Your paying for the view of the water.
We have been going here for like 10 years and have loved it. It was a special place we would go and take out of town friends. We hadn't been there in a while and was bummed out when I walked into the foyer to see the same furniture that has been there for years and years all beat up and dirty. It smelled moldy when we first walked in and everything just seemed really dirty and greasy. The hostess was wearing a shirt that looked like it was sprayed painted on. I was embarrassed because we had friends with us and I was bragging on how great this restaurant was. Everything inside just looked old and neglected and it was sad. It just seems like every time there is a great place to go around here, the owners begin to get greedy and not invest any money in their places. The service was great and the food was good. Probably won't go back.
We have been going to The Lobstery Shanty in Toms River for five years. Every time the food is perfect, the service exceptional, and the atmosphere great. It usually costs us about $70 for King Crab (my favorite dish) and surf & Turf dinner ( my husbands favorite) with Lobster Bique (more expensive than the soup or salad choice that comes with each dinner). We have never been disapionted no matter when we go or what we order - sure you can go to Red Lobster for less but the food isn't excpetional and the service certianly isn't exceptional and the wait can last over an hour and a half. It's worth the little extra you pay - but keep this in mind - I DO NOT TIP - you have to be really great to get a tip from me and everytime were at The Lobster Shanty I feel that service was good enough and the food was good enough to leave at least $10 - check them out - you'll love it!!
