Having grown up in a German family with my mom fresh off the boat and my dad first generation here in the US, I long for the foods I grew up with. We had a local butcher in town but I live far from there now and other GB's I've come to trust are also far away. It was only recently that my SIL invited me to lunch at this establishment. I ordered the bratwurst with sauerkraut and potato salad and was very impressed. I left with a bundle of cold cuts as well. I returned this past weekend and repeated my order. Again, the food was awesome and I was not disappointed. One of the male staff waited on me hand and foot and even offered to order my cold cuts while my toddler and I ate. Even when I prepared to check out and dropped a huge bottle of syrup (cringe...pregnant bellies are apparently slippery and no good for holding objects against!), they did not make me feel bad despite the packed area and the obvious inconvenience and sticky mess I caused. I was mortified and requested that I pay for the syrup twice but when I got to my car, I realized they didn't charge me. Upon returning home, I once again sampled the cold cuts I'd ordered...they were wonderful. True, every butcher has his/her own recipe and their headcheese was somewhat different than what I'm accustomed to but I enjoyed the uniqueness...the flavor is there. And their zungenwurst is probably my favorite ever. I plan on returning more frequently to buy more of their fabulous fare (and at great prices too!). I read some of the other reviews and I understand not everyone has had the best experience but seriously people, the quality is there and they are BUSY. If something goes wrong, they are only human...give them another chance...I doubt you'd be disappointed!
I know one of the cooks there, when she makes the german potato salad it is to die for. her name is ottie and can she cook.. yes, this place is always very busy and sometimes you have to wait. but it is worth it.
After reading all the raving reviews here, I can't believe that my husband and I ate in the same place. First of all, we had a young man who was supposed to be waiting on us. I can't say that we had good service at all. He did not seem at all interested in waiting on us. He took forever to bring us our salad and coffee. We had to ask for bread. When we got it, we had two small slices in our basket. Two people next to us had a basket brimming with bread, and we had one slice for each of us. After waiting a very long time for our meal, it finally arrived. We took this in stride because we know it takes time for food to cook. We ordered the meat loaf dinner. The meat was very pink. I told the young man about this and he found a young lady to come to our table. We were told that the food is cooked to temperature and to rest assured that the meat was fully cooked, even though it was a rosey pink color. I told the girl that this was not acceptable to me and that I don't eat pink meat. I was told that this is the way it is and that's that. needless to say, I did not eat this dinner, but we did pay for it. We had to wait a long time for the young man to come back to our table to give us our check. He never did. My husband finally went to the register and asked the girl to get us our check. This was not a very good experience for us and we will not be returning to this establishment. I am really glad for all the others who are very satisfied with their meals and experience. It was not so for us.
Wow!! I just had my third trip to the Forked River Butcher. I recently moved back to Lacey and on a whim decided to stop in after work one day. I helped myself to some ready meals [sauerbraten, mashed potatoes and chicken joseph], and I could not wait to get home to try them. Everything was spectacular! The food is not only delicious and homemade, but also very reasonable. I definately would recommend this place to anyone.
Well we just went there for the third time in about 5 weeks. We live about 100 miles away and even with these crazy gas prices we have been finding any way possible to combine other trips with a stop here. Everything we have gotten has been very high quality and the prices are excellent. Cold meats, home made hot dogs, kielbasa, pork filets with dry rub, salads, meals like beef burgundy and pasta with vodka sauce, home made pierogies, and their incredible stuffed breads that must weigh about 2 pounds are just some of the items we have enjoyed. The staff have always been very helpful and we enjoy not only the food but the whole experience. My only complaint is that they are not closer! If you are ever in the area you must stop there. You will not be disappointed with the incredible quality, variety, and deliciousness!
I am a long time customer and fan of the German Butcher. As a chef, I am always looking for the best quality meats, and you can definately find that here. You must try and speak to the butcher Wolfgang when you go and visit, he is incredibly knowledgable about his craft.
