White House/Black Market

Description

Since World War II, this sub shop has been a favorite sandwich joint for locals. It may be just a little place, but it is filled with character and history. A whole sandwich is 3 feet long and the rolls are baked fresh everyday, from Formica Brothers Bakery (just across the street). These sandwich artists really know what they are doingjust order the White House Special and you'll see what all the rave is about.

There is no finer sub made in all of Jersey, alot try to duplicate, there like Avis, trying harder but not as good. I live in Florida, and a HSHS grad, but my good friend still sends them to me on a frequent basis, the aroma, the freshness, the fantastic service is untouchable. Mouth is watering now as I write, To the employees past and present keep up the great work, only wished you could of gone national.

When I was a 2 or 3 years old, my mom used to take me here and cut up the subs into little tiny pieces. Best subs ever. The servers always remember me, too, which is weird because I only go like once a year now. They need to expand, particularly to California. It's kind of weird how successful this place is, considering the fact that it's basically a hole in the wall. You come here in the winter-time and it's FREEZING, but you don't care because the food is so damn good!

this place is a goldmine, and probably as an institution, it hasn't change in looks, method and process to get things done since the day it opened,,,, of course it's a dive. the food is decent and fresh as it should be because of the volume they do, but can fail because of the process, i.e. - cheese steaks are over cooked and dry because they are making a hoagie or doing other things too.... inefficiency to process orders and won't change,,, because their profit does not mean they should change. If they would consult with me, i could double their ROP. i don't need to describe the food anymore, other than to say that you can read the reviews for those details, as there are tons of them, here and everywhere else. But if you read the bad reviews, they are true too. So for people to criticize the low review and then have no reviews themselves is a grain of salt, as your comment can be argued for being negative to a negative is meaningless. it was a hassle to find parking space, or pay for parking and wary of the neighborhood, then to wait and wait to order and then wait to get your order....., unless you live in AC, or your town does not make decent cheesesteak/hoagies, then go. I would not make a special trip to AC to come here, and i would not come here, if i go to AC,,, as there are other food places to try and enjoy much more than a hoagie/cheesesteak.

The most amazing sub shop ever! The Special is the very best sandwich, of any kind, I've ever had. This is a funky little place opened in the mid-to-late 40's, and operated in the same location ever since, and is loaded with pictures and memorabilia - worth the trip here alone - well, nearly alone. Their are generally two sizes available for each sub, and even the smaller one can be split for most folks, They get crowded early, as we found out the first time we tried - we were there at 10 AM the next morning when they opened - first in line. We ordered the Special & a Cheesesteak, both small. Out of sight. One of the keys is the marvelous bread, which is delivered from a bakery across the street (forget the name) as often as necessary during each day. The large amount of meat and cheese is rolled up, and their pepper relish is loaded in the middle. Wow.

I've been eating there subs since 1950 or so. My wife bought me a Christmas present one year by having subs FedXd to Los Angeles where we now live. Absoutely the best sandwhich in the USA.. Nothing comes close. The rolls are the greatest and the lunch meat the freshest. Five Stars ...Five Stars...Five Stars...

Was very disappointed this past week to stop here for a sub. I have been coming to the White House since 1963... Quality of the lunch meat has changed and is sliced too thick. It almost has a rubbery texture to the meats. I see alot of restaurants cutting corners to make ends meet when times are tough, but come on White House!! The bread makes the sandwich...you lose the taste with too much meat....
