My friends and I had the most delightful pre-theater dinner last night. We were quickly seated at a table for four and our bottles of wine uncorked and poured. Having been to many uneventful Thai restaurants, we were pleased to find that this was NOT the usual chunk o' chicken, red and green bell peppers, tasteless mushrooms and add sauce of choice.
I started with Tom Kha Talay, my favorite Thai soup, which did not disappoint -- the balance of galangal and lime was perfect, temperature not too hot (which I hate), and the scallops floating in the soup were huge and sweet. I was also provided a dish of finely crushed red pepper to add spice heat to my liking. My partner had something called a "Snow White". I may get this next time. It was a cup (bean curd, not sure) filled with pear, cucumber, sprouts and a nice peanut sauce -- the combo of flavors was outstanding. Our friends split some classic spring rolls which came with a great plum sauce (but they were offered others sauces if they wanted) and a puff pastry with curried chicken and potato with a sweet cucumber sauce. Yum.
We had more wine and a small included salad (palate cleanser sized). My entree was Massamun Beef -- chunks of beef that was apparently simmered for hours it was so tender for being well done, chunks of potatoes and a yummy brown tamarind sauce. Very flavorful and not spicy hot at all. And, thank goodness, not a single red or green bell pepper in sight -- mind you they had those dishes on the menu; it's just that they offered choice! Partner had a Green Curry Chicken dish with green peas, eggplant cubes, and a sweet green sauce. Also, we all tasted my friend's Chu-Chee prawns. I had to write that down since I was unfamiliar with Chu-Chee. A simple dish (but not plain) with one of the best red curry toppings I have ever tried. It also came available as a lightly fried fish fillet with same sauce; I'll be trying that in the near future.
Now I've saved the best for last. We all passed around bites of the house special duck (? Hong Hern, I think). My god, absolutely the best ever. And served with Kiwi slices which I wasn't sure about but it turned out to be a great choice. Kudos to the creative chef.
Towards the end of the meal, the hostess came by and very seriously wanted to know what we thought. You could see her pride as she heard our glowing commentary. She tried to convince us to get dessert (the coconut sorbet got my attention) but we were so full, we declined. Next time. And the next. And the next. So much more to try!
