Light Horse Tavern, Jersey City

Great atmosphere, wait staff seemed overwhelmed. Missed the mark on the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. Crab cake mixture seemed over-mixed, there were no lumps of crab meat, lacked flavor AND there were shells in my crab cake from the first bite to the last. However, I might consider giving this place another shot.

Aside from my much-loved former colleagues, the other thing I miss most about not working in Jersey City is my weekly trip to The Light Horse Tavern. My friends and I love this place! The ambiance is beautiful: high ceilings, spacious, lots of light but warm and inviting at the same time. I've tried lots of dishes here but hands down my favourite has always been the Light Horse Burger with Blue Cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion served on a brioche bun and a side of fries with Chili Mayo. I like my burgers rare and they always get it right and the combo of the meatiness, the blue cheese kick and sweetness of the brioche paired with these skinny, crispy fries and spicy chili mayo for dipping. Pair it up with a nice cold pilsner or glass of Rioja ... ahhhh!!! life just does not get better then that!!!! which is why i always head to The Light Horse Tavern when I get a mad burger craving :-) ... and I always try to leave some room for the bread pudding. it's wicked good!!!! My only points off are for service, which tends to be spotty. Most of the servers are fantastic! very knowledgeable and nice .. but there are a couple of wackadoes I could do without.

Bad experience at brunch. Ordered drink did not arrive. Meal order was wrong. Silverware missing. Food good. Service abysmal.

The food is excelent, service too. Sometimes we go to the city to a new place and we just think: Light Horse is better. I love eating there. I am going to miss this place when I move away...

Great restaurant - enjoyed the friendly service and lively atmosphere. The raw bar was fresh and well provisioned with oysters and shrimp. They have innovative fish dishes with light sauces. My friends enjoyed the steak. Good selection of wine and international beers. Staff is always pleasant and helpful.

Food was not prepared to liking. Steak was served well and asked for medium. Menu was just too expensive for the food and the service. Don't think this restaurant will last long. There are nicer restaurants in the Paulus hook area to eat at.

Great food, friendly service and rustic atmosphere. This is our favorite place to eat in Jersey City. They do a great late morning brunch! Also highly recommended for dinner. Food is american style, not your middle of the road place, but not too fancy either. Middle aged crowd. Bar area, two room downstairs and another upstairs. Rooms can be reserved for private parties. Expect to spend $20 to $40 per person for dinner. Most entrees are in the mid to high teens. I believe the lowest priced entree is about $12 (not positive about this).

Living in the area, I appreciate a great restaurant like the LIght Horse. The atmosphere is great, the service is superb, convenient location, love the oysters, and beer/wine selection is nice. However, I like my steak Medium rare. The first time i ordered one there I ordered MR and it came back rare. The second time I ordered Medium (because of the prior experience) and it came rare. If a restaurant is going to charge these prices they need to invest in someone who knows how to cook meat- its that simple. I shouldnt have to describe to the waiter/cook what the steak should look like for each temperature. Other than that, I highly recommend the place.
