I have been eating here for several years and have never been disappointed not until yesterday and for that I can not say that this is a great place to eat. They can not blame that it was Sunday and it was very busy, because given the time of day, lunch hour, they had 10 customers, if that. The food had no taste and appeared to be old. I will not be returning in the future.
I have eaten at the Algarve almost continuosly for the last 4 weeks as I am here for a contract and needed a good place to eat and hang out away from the hotel. I test drove many bars and restaurants and have stuck with Algarve because it is the best one!
The bar is great, everyone is very friendly, everyone seems to know each other. As a new patron, Italian from NC no less, I felt like they took me in to their family. Happy hour is $1.35 all draft beers. Find a place where you can get a Stella Artois for less than $1.35.
I usually can only eat half of what they put on my plate and have to take the leftovers back to the hotel. They make the Bacalao like my grandma used to and it is twice as big. It is like a collar of cod. Unbelievable.
I have not had the take out but it always seems like there is a line in there. I cannot imagine that it could be bad as I see at least one cop in there everytime and you know those guys can go anywhere and get anything they want. If they chose a place it usually means a good deal and cheap food. Even if they got it free, if the food was bad, they would go elsewhere.
All of the waiters are cool and they get me whatever I ask for, explain what it is and then let me taste it if I am not sure - especially desserts. I have had many free aperitif's from the manager and from staying at the hotel, I get a discount when I remember to bring in my key card. So I recommend this place to all traveling people.
You can park safely behind the building and I have never had a problem.
Service is simply bad at this restaurant. Rudeness is a way of life of manager/owner, and if you go to the takeout section it gets gruesome with that lady that has been there for the longest. Food is not bad though. Only problem is they make you feel like a prisoner, really bad.
If you call ahead for take out, the food is never ready. I've been coming here for years and this never changes. You call ahead and still have to wait 10 minutes. The food was good until I tried Portugal Express on S. Broad Street.
Food is excellent! Service is not so great. Chicken, rice and veg is so good. However, I dined in once (usually I take out) and the waiter was not so nice. He questioned why I ordered only the 1/2 chicken with rice and veggies. The rest of our dinner he ignored us, was rude when I called him over and left a sick feeling in my stomach in regards to his nasty treatment. He received no tip and deserved less. Other than this.... I love the food. ---- Go the take out way. Its a bit of a wait but worth it. Although the employees that take the order are not so friendly either but not rude.
The food in this restaurant is average, the side portions are very small and the service is very poor when you order take out. I was shucked when the girl gave me my order. The trays seamed small for 6 orders two whole orders of chicken, two whole orders of pork ribs and two orders of Picadinho. After spending $73.00, I asked the girl to check and make sure I had everything because the containers looked small to have the fries and the rice for all of the 6 orders. She was so annoyed at the questions and very nasty answered yes. The two orders of Picadinho looked more like one order of Picadinho at any other Portuguese take out place. I would not recommend the Picadinho here; the meat had a lot of fat and it was hard. I am used to ordering Chicken and pork ribs from other take out places and I always get plenty of rice and fries but this is not the case here. I did not get enough rice and fries. I will never go back to Algarve Restaurant again and will not recommend it.
If you like portuguese food try Valencia Rest they are awesome!! I also, like Stephanie's BBQ, they both serve big portions.
This restaurants food is average the service is very poor when you order take out. They forget to put condements and side dishes and they take over an hour to get you the food so many times the food is ice cold when you get it. If you like portuguese or spanish food try valenca they are awesome!!
Hopefully after April 17, the place would be non-smoking. The barbecue spare ribs is a bit dry including the steak. The place itself is in an area where parking is very limited. The price is reasonable. They have the serradura which is good and the shrimp dish was delicious as well. It's one of the restaurants that we order from when we have lunch meetings at work. They also deliver in fact I ordered lunch for my personnel from them back in January.
