Buffalo chicken wings, contrary to some beliefs, do not come from flying buffalo, but rather are chicken wings cooked in a cayenne pepper-based sauce, the spicy recipe originating in Buffalo, NY. Thus the “Buffalo chicken” nomer. Of course, just like in Brazil, where “Brazil nuts” are just called “nuts”, in Buffalo, Buffalo chicken wings are simply referred to as “wings” or “chicken wings”.
Many variations on the original Buffalo chicken wing recipe exist…Buffalo chicken tenders, Buffalo chicken wingettes, boneless Buffalo chicken wings, Buffalo chicken sandwiches…and now there’s the Buffalo chicken salad, brought to us by Norwalk Pizza and Pasta, of Norwalk, CT, some 420 miles from the famed city that dreamt up the original spicy chicken recipe.
The Buffalo chicken salad is, quite simply, the best variation on the original Buffalo chicken wing this reviewer has found to date. Purists may snub this heretofore unsung gem, turning their nose up at the “chicken tenders in a spicy blue cheese sauce”, which hardly can be considered a real Buffalo chicken wing…it’s far from the original recipe. However, this foodie would contend that it is variations on original recipes that make for the best dishes, and the Norwalk P&P Buffalo chicken salad is no exception. The fried chicken tenders have a delightfully crunchy exterior, while tender all-white meat chicken within just melts in your mouth, in the fire of that spicy sauce, tempered by the blue cheese. The salad itself is kept simple…lettuce, grape tomatoes, shredded carrot, olives, green pepper and cucumbers make up a basic, fresh, and pleasing bed for the true star of the salad…the chicken.
Anyone who enjoys a good salad and the spicy smack of cayenne pepper sauce such as that found in the original Buffalo chicken will adore this salad, as did this humble reviewer. A definite keeper.
