I grew up in San Diego, CA, and spent much of my youth in Tijuana, MX. I also lived in Guadalajara, Jalisco, MX for many years. Moving to CT was a shock to my Mexican food senses and it wasn't until I found El Mexicano that I finally had a good Mexican meal. By far the best ceviche and carnitas in CT. And while it may not be the fanciest restaurant in CT, it's by far the most authentic.

Avoid this place!
By Colin S, 4/20/06
I had been looking forward to having a good Mexican dinner, so I located El Mexicano and arrived at about 7.20 on a wednesday eveining. The restaurant was very quiet, with only myself and one couple present. The waitress brought me a menu, and a bowl of tortilla chips and a bowl of salsa. She pressured me into having a drink, so I grudgingly accepted a glass of water. I ordered sopa de menudo as a first course, and beefe tampequena as a main course. Eventually my soup arrived, and to give credit where due, it was hot. The soup tasted of nothing, a very bad shock since every time I've had menudo before it has been a spicy and flavorful experience. When the main course arrived, it was also completely devoid of any flavor. I ate enough of it to fill my stomach, paid my bill ($19) and left, vowing never to return. Quite frankly, this was the worst restaurant meal I have ever eaten. I like Mexican food, and usually make jokes about the Taco Bell fast food chain not being anything like Mexican food, but on this occasion I would have been better off going to Taco Bell - the food would have been more Mexican influenced, and would have cost me less money!
