Growing up in Japan, I know what traditional sushi tastes like. If you want to stick with the traditional, conventional Japanese cuisine, Miya's is not for you. But, for curious people who don't mind exploring new things and are up for surprise, Miya's is the place to be. My first dining experience was wonderful despite the fact that we waited easy 30-40 minutes for the food to come after the order. Understandable with that type of busy place, and the amazing food made up for it. What I loved the most besides rolls was ginger! Will definitely be going back again for our treat =)

A unique sushi place to be sure! It is good quality food and great tasting! I like how the owner tries to make his business green and sustainable and he contributes to so many good causes in the community. This place can get busy, but it is worth standing in line.

Very inventive and creative. The menu is so extensive and in depth. I love reading about how the rolls are created. It is casual decor but the draw is obviously the one of a kind food that cannot be found elsewhere. Chef Bun takes chances and clearly loves food. He was a wonderful host and sent out lots of creations for us to try. I love this restaurant. It is one of a kind. The chef has won many Taste of the Nations awards and it is clear why.

I went there in Dec 22nd 2009 with my friend and tried their dinner course menu ($55/person) and some rolls. Unfortunately, that was the worst Japanese cousin I ever had in my entire life. Not that I had high expectation from the beginning (it is not Nobu or Morrimoto) but at least hope to get fresh and decent food. First, the restaurant was full of fruit flies that interfered during our whole meal. Politely asked the waiter if he could do something with it but was said nothing they could do about it. Second, the dinner course menu (8 courses) was all put together once without instruction except the fried potatoe appetizer. Rice of all the sushi and rolls was very hard and dry which at some point we stopped finishing the dishes.Besides one sashimi dish, rest of course dishes, I have to say those were just one tiny piece from all the different rolls. Untill the point, of course I didn't know that was it for the diiner course meal. After I found out it was, I was in total shock with my friend and din't know what to say after to the waiter. Everything was cold and far from being fresh. Kimchi seasoned sushi wasn't tasty and far from the authentic Kimchi seasoning taste. Left $100 there for two and it was total waste. As a frequnt diner who knows about the restaurant business, first time I emailed the owner with complaints right after but didn't hear from him yet (the waiter suggested emailing him when I told him our dinner was very bad). Still wondering how they can do business in this manner but guess it works to others who are not familiar with Japanese cousin. From New Haven, Noam

Where to start.. I am a sushi lover and Miya's is by far my favorite. No, this is not your typical sushi so I would not recommend looking for a California roll, however if you are looking for exceptional food and homemade sake this is a must. Go ahead order the sampler and ask your service person to be creative with your sushi, sit back and enjoy the unusual yet enticing selections. Is there a possibility you will have a wait.. yes but it is more than worth it (isn't any resaurant thats worth its weight). The ultraviolet sake is my favorite but have not had a bad one here. For the sheer creativity and combinations, Miya's is worth the drive, the walk, the wait and the price .

The most inventive sushi anywhere. Not for the faint of heart, or the sushi purist, as Chef Bun will try anything - kimchi, cream cheese, potatoes, Havarti, and number of other unlikely ingredients. All of these above were in our lunch selection. It was amazing!

Creative sushi. Not a Japanese restaurant! Good things come to those who wait. Go in with patience and an open mind. All I can say is pumpkin miso, tokyo fries, sweet mothers milk, ebibaba(winner of the taste of the nation award), and some of the in house sake(dragon lady is my fav). If you want traditional Japanese...go to Japan!

If your a sushi purist, this may not be the place for you. However, if you are adventuresome, definitely try Miya's out! They have very creative "rolls" and drinks - Try the Karma Sutra...it's the best. As with most sushi places, it's quite pricey, but worth it. Try not to go on a weekend...it gets packed and the building is quite "cozy."

Miyas is consistently rated one of the areas best restaurants, period. To really enjoy Miya's, you can't go in there expecting Japanese food. Anyone that knows anything about Miya's knows that is NOT what you will get, and anyone working there, including the owners, would be GLAD to sit and chat with you about their Japanese inspirations, but how their food is an evolution beyond the traditional. If hibachi and california rolls is your idea of an adventurous meal, Miya's is like a trip to Mars....a delicious trip to Mars. To those who went there expecting Japanese food, you obviously did not do your homework at all. The owner of the restaurant will be the FIRST to tell you that his cuisine is NOT traditional Japanese. The menu even freely explains that the cuisine is a constantly evolving experiment. If you're going to eat at Miyas, you need to go in with an open mind. And if you had to wait 90 minutes to get seated, that's usually not a sign that the food is bad. Sounds like the bad reviews of this restaurant are written by the non-adventurous types who's idea of edgy fusion is a Philadelphia roll.

i'm a vegetarian so when I saw how many veggie options they had, I was thrilled. The problem is twofold at this restaurant however. First, the food isn't all that good. I'll be the first to admit that when I roll sushi, it's not that great. This restaurant just barely did better then my own creations. The other problem is how incredibly unorganized they can be. I can attest to the other writer who had to wait 90 minutes after making reservations. It's happended to me as well. There are better sushi restaurants in New Haven. Not one is great but I would suggest Miso over Miya's.
