Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, New Haven

Only space for 5 stars. What a shame, I give Pepe s 10 stars. Going there since 1961. Got married and took my wife there. Had two kids and Pepe s is the only pizza they want.

Food was burnt and waitress was very rude with a bad attitude!!!

The last I went to Pepe's was two years ago. The pizza was outstanding.....this time the pizza was bad. The cheese was awful, the peperoni was burned, and the tomato was tasteful. The pizza was in the oven far too long and was dry and tasteless. I think Pepe' s is living off its reputation. As I was leaving I noticed many customers left a lot of their pizza on their plate and didn't even bother to box up the left over for take out.

Excellent!!! We made a special trip to Pepe's Pizzeria during our vacation in NYC. It was definitely well worth the trip!! My family and I agree that this was 100% beyond a shadow of a doubt the best pizza we have ever eaten and my wife don't even like pizza that well!!!! Perfect flavor and great service. We had the pepperoni, sausage and extra cheese it was great!! I will definitely go back there if I'm ever within a hundred miles of the place!!!

We ended up at Frank Pepe's after walking out of Sally's. I should have trusted my first instinct and started there! The waiters were nice and friendly and we were given a choice of where to wait (inside waiting area or outside). After we were seated the waitress helped us choose our pizza (we wanted the pizza with mozzarella nothing else on it) and brought us the soda we ordered soon after. I like the fact they serve a soda local to the area! The pizza was extremely greasy but the waitress brought a pile of napkins for us.

Went there last night, and the pizza was soggy (vegtable pizza) and the clam apizza was the worst we've ever had. Don't know what's going on with Pepe's, but I thought it was one of the worst pizza's we've ever had!!!!

I stayed about 15 minutes in line, after 2PM. I assume the wait is longer at noon, or 5 to 8PM. I just enjoyed the convenient that Pepe's is open for both lunch and dinner. Service is not bad. They try to sit you fast and serve you fast, and they have more tables compared to the other pizzeria in the neighborhood. This is good for their business and good for customers to get in there fast. especially in cold days and nights of winter. They may not look that friendly in the beginning, well, they have to serve many customers. But if you make a conversation with them, they look very nice and friendly.We ordered two different pizzas, veggie and chicken. I regret I did not ordered plain cheese or clam. Veggie was not great. Vegetable toppings took out the taste of sauce and bread. but the chicken was good. Overall. Bread taste very good, sauce is just right, and cheese is wonderful. Our bread was just cooked right, it had black burned spots, but completely perfect. I did not see any sign or taste of charcoal, but I could tell it was different from other places and cooked in a good oven. It was a little bit salty, but I liked it that way. Bread was thin and delicious, with a wonderful fresh bread aroma. sauce had a nice taste of tomato, but not too sour, Cheese was different from any other place that I had pizza, and overall pizza did not have as much fat and oil as other places. Environment is just OK, with old decoration and furniture. Restroom is small, but clean. We could see the kitchen, it was big and clean. Many young guys were working in the kitchen, they have good size of staff to serve the customers fast, and make the waiting time shorter. Parking is a problem in that neighborhood, it may take a while to find a spot to park in busy time of the day, Try Pepe's parking lot first, you may be lucky to find a spot in there, Then try the street. It was my 2nd time in Pepe's in three years and If I go to New Haven, I will stop there again. I would recommend it to all, it is a great pizza, one of the best.

Over-rated. I had heard such great reviews since I've been living in CT. So when I finally tried it, I was very disappointed. Taste aside the pizza crust was totally burned and when I brought it the attention of the staff they really were not all that responsive. I got a shrug. As far as taste goes, there's nothing to rave about...though I guess since my pizza was charred anyway how would I know? I've had better pizza in CT, namely at Murphy's out in Farmington. Murphy's has good food and great atmosphere. I will never return to Pepe's, which is totally over-hyped.

Worth the wait: You cannot be from New Haven and not experienced a Pepe's this is the best pizza that I have had in my life. The brickoven give that rustic italian flavor and the essence of the Pizzeria is #!1.

over rated indeed ! sally's is better and modern is even better . not worth the bother to stand outside of building for an hour . actually there is no place on this earth where i would stand outside for an hour to get food. pepe's is a landmark but so is the washington monument . what does that have to do with the apizza ? nothing at all but i thought it sounded pretty cool ! pepe's is very good but there are better places that are cheaper and much more accessible .
