Our story begins in 1973... when the Zelepos family opened Mystic Pizza. Hard work, family effort and a "secret recipe" contributed to the long run success of Mystic Pizza. Of course, the real reason behind our success is our pizza. So addicting is Mystic Pizza that the crowds grew and grew. The day Hollywood came to town... Incredibly, Mystic PizzaA(R) caught the eye of screenwriter Amy Jones, who was summering in the area. Ms. Jones chose Mystic Pizza as the focus and setting for her story of the lives and loves of three young waitresses. The movie was filmed on location in Mystic and neighboring towns. "Mystic Pizza" was released in 1988 and was a hit, even Siskel and Ebert gave it two thumbs up!
We could not believe the bad reviews about Mystic Pizza!!!! We mainly went because of the fame from the movie but we were blown away by the quality of the food. We ordered a large pizza and chicken wings and WOW was I amazed. We got the wings first and they were probably the best I ever had! We do lots of traveling and were on a halloween trip/leef peeping of all New England states and I think this was the best of the trip! Although we did have some pretty good seafood in Portland that might rival it for first place. Next came the Pizza, we all thought how can they top the wings and surely the wings must be the only good thing on the menu, judging by reviews! Wrong! Pizza was cheesy, lots of ingredients, crust was crispy, all in all delicious! We will be back our next time in Mystic...dont just come for the movie fame, come for the food!
I came to Mystic on vacation and heard so much about the movie, Mystic Pizza, so how can I not go to this landmark? Well, let me tell you, I love pizza; my favorite food. I even like some frozen pizzas, but without exaggeration, this was absolutley the worst pizza I ever had in my life. Domino's, California Pizza Kitchen(frozen), Stouffers(french bread) was better! The worst $23 I ever spent in my entire life. Burnt toppings, clumpy cheese, no sauce, frozen dried out crust=UNEDIBLE! Icouldn't return it since I had it delivered to hotel room, what a waste.
It was great seeing all the pictures of the movie. The service was great, the people were nice, but the pizza was DISAPPOINTING! I heard all these nice things about it, but it was just very disappointing.
While I think the review from Mrs. H is a bit strong, I have to confess that I wish I also had read the reviews and decided to eat elsewhere. The combination pizza I ordered was mediocre at best, and the reason I'm writing this review at 4:45 in the morning is that I have a very upset stomach. That usually only happens when I eat something very greasy or greasy/salty, and I'm guessing that's what happened here.
Not the worst pizza I've ever had (that prize will likely always belong to a certain Pizza Hut in Baltimore), but God knows there was nothing mystical about my pizza experience at Mystic Pizza.
As others have noted.... cute and enjoyable movie does not guarantee a decent pizza.
Pizza Hut would be better. My husband, daughter and I stopped in here, while we were visiting family.
Go take your picture in front, and even buy a shirt - but save your stomach, and go eat somewhere else!
Greasy, and does not have any flavor.
I read the reviews, and still ate there. Learn from my mistake.
Movie - Yes. Pizza - NO!!!!!!!
The only people giving Mystic Pizza rave and great reviews are the people who works there plus the owners. Then their friends & relatives.
Trust me, do not waste your time & money on their pizza. Maybe try their burgers or BLT or something. Those may be better (but we did not try those). The pizza was garbage.
Mystic pizza is a big mistake. Pizza was greasy & soggy. Lousy pizza. The 49 cents a slice pizza at Costco or Sam's club is better than this junk. It actually taste like frozen pizza that got placed in an oven.
Go to Sally's or Pepe's pizzeria in New Haven instead. Pepe's will be in Yonkers NY soon and they have branches in Fairfied, Manchester, and Mohegan Sun.
Sally's does not take credit cards, cash is king baby!!!! Personally, I like Sally's better than Pepe's but the long wait outside and inside are killers. If u don't mind the long wait, go to Sally's. Pepe's is just as good with a shorter wait.
