I just started brewing beer, and I had a million questions. Rich, Matt, and Dana patiently answered them all. They offer a class that is in two parts - the first day you learn how to brew beer, and a week later you learn how to bottle the beer you brewed the week before. They were very accomodating in setting up a class for our company employees. Everyone had a great time, and we learned a lot. I now can brew great tasting beer, and I m a very satisfied customer. Some people have mentioned their prices. If you are going to pick their brains and reap the benefit of their knowledge, be fair and support local business.
Can't say enough good things about this store and Rich (have not met other owner). Started going there June, 2009 - the entire operation has undergone a remarkable transformation with new ownership into a well-managed operation. Being a novice winemaker, I need helpful guidance, direction and of course, products at a good price. This place has all of these.
Top Notch Wine and Brew Supplier! Whether your experienced or new to the craft, Rich is a great guy to deal with. If you have a huge ego or are a wine/beer snob maybe this isn't your place. All brewers and wine makers are welcome here.
Rich will bend over backwards to help you get your batch done and done well. He is busting his but to continually improve the shop and his PRICES ARE THE LOWEST AROUND. And he'll special order if he doesn't have a particular specialty item in stock.
After being ignored and put down by elitist snobs at other beer/wine making suppliers it was a pleasure to find a place where you can ask a 'dumb' question without being made to feel like a fool!
My roommates and I have been only brewing for a few months and started to before the change. We went to one other which was Beer and Wine making and the guys their was just very unhelpful and the prices were way over online prices. When we got to this store Rich whose name i just found out now on here helped us and was very knowledgeable. We skipped extract and went straight with grain recipes and what he gave us was great. I think the new layout of the store is much better than it was and would recommend it to anyone especially if your just learning.
When I came into the store in the middle of June I was blown away by how much things had changed. The whole layout of the store was revamped, inventory levels were back up to a level I had not seen in a year. It turns out that the store was bought out by it's current clerk- Rich, and a homebrewer-Bill. These guys are really turning the place around and listening to what their customers want. I would recommend this store to all my brewing friends, and if you haven't been in lately- you really should see what they have done with the place.
!!Brewers Beware!! of these guys and their sales pitch. I have only been brewing a number of years. Each time I ventured into this shop with a new recipe, I find that I was being sold inferior product or not what the recipe has called for, and at a premium price to boot. They say new ownership but I see the same sales people behind the counter as of 7/15/2010 when I was sold, for the second time this year, expired yeast. Do to the inconvenience and expense of not getting the proper ingredients from these guys I have been forced to other shops in the area, where I can get the right stuff 99%of the time. I'm told that Brew and Wine Hobby Shop is the oldest in the state. Well... lets just say older is not better just expired like the yeast I purchased. So if your into all grain or extract brewing like I... do yourself a favor and check out other places.
Good luck and Hoppy Brewing:)
Quite excited about the new ownership thats taking over. I've been brewing for about 7 months now and the guy who is taking over is great. Very help and knowledgable. Prices are great too. Due to the previous owner not many things were in stock when needed but I stopped in yesterday and they were remodeling the place already. Place already looks great and the inventory is already noticably better. Can't wait to see how the place looks when its finished. I'll definately be a customer for life. Only thing I buy online now are hops that aren't as easily found in these areas.
I stopped in with the intent to buy some extract kits but wanted to hop them myself--slowly work my way into full time homebrewing! I wasn't sure what hops would fit the style I liked most, and the owner brought out beer samples for me to try so I could get a feel for what the different hops would do. He gave me some great deals and recommendations, and the beer ended up turning out to be one of my very best to date.
I've been to the other homebrewing store in E. Hartford, and its ok, but the customer serviced pales in comparison to the friendly and helpful staff here. HIGHLY recommended as this will be the only brew store I go to now.
