I went with my grandparents to The Brown Cow in Newport, VT for the first time yesterday. I had THE BEST steak dinner, of my life. It was cooked exactly how I liked it and tasted like a summer evening family BBQ. The entire staff was cheerful, the price was AWESOME, and it was generally enjoyable to be there. I highly recommend the Brown Cow!
This is a small country restaurant with charm and delicious food. Portions are very generous. The blueberry pancakes with VT maple syrup are incredible! Food is served fast by very nice staff. The atmosphere will take you back to the 40's-50's. Sometimes very busy, but if you have to wait outside coffee or tea is provided to take the edge off. I try to eat there at least once a week. Thanks to a loved one, I stumbled upon the Brown Cow about a year ago. Since then, every time we go to Newport, we hit the Brown Cow at least once during our visit for breakfast.
I typically will get the Cow Plop. Really bad name for a breakfast dish, but it is very tasty. It is hash browns and scrambled eggs covered in a meaty gravy with a very light and airy biscuit served on the side. This is the dish that I try to get every time we go there.
We have also had the french toast and the pancakes here. The french toast is very good and the pancakes are also very good.
Tiny place, so expect a wait on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You can be served coffee while waiting outside for a table.
As for the waitstaff mentioned by dutchtopdog - we have never had any problems with the waitresses. All of them have been very knowledgeable and quick with the service.
This place is worth the visit.
last time I eat there... The food was okay, but waited a really long time for it... And the head guy there was just rude to customers and other workers... I felt like I was being watched the whole time by him... Last time my girl friend and I stop there when visiting Newport...
This is as casual as it gets, if your not wearing a ripped pair of jeans and a john deere t-shirt everyone will be staring at you, the coffee is just barely acceptable to drink, the food is good, however they rush you to place an order then you wait a looonngg time to get it. I was there on a Sunday morning at 8am so the place was not full yet even though it is very small. If you don't drink much coffee and don't mind being gawked at go ahead the omelets are okay, but if you just want to sip a good cup of java and have an enjoyable breakfast seek it elsewhere.
The food is terrible, the owner seems to have a giant bug up his butt. The only redeeming quality about this restaurant is a few of his employees who are polite & courteous. On top of that, the owner has been harassing several citizens of the community over the past several weeks which in itself is causing me to boycott his establishment.
