Absolutely the BEST sandwich shop in Burlington. I went to UVM but still make regular trips up there just for a Red Onion sandwich! Fresh homemade bread is sliced thick and the sandwiches are loaded. The oversized cookies are amazing, too. There's only one downside-- there's usually a line out the door and there's very limited seating as it's such a small place. Totally worth the wait, though!

I don't know why some people have such an issue with the atmosphere of this adorable sandwich shop. I have never been bothered by the level of cleanliness of the restaurant and I think it is a natural part of the Burlington scene. I have always been met with friendly faces and they work to make each sandwich to order as fast as they can! I think the Red Onion represents the quintessential Vermont eatery, original and delicious!

When I used to live in Vermont, this was my favorite sandwich shop to go to. Now when I come back to VT to visit I always have to stop by.

Amazing Sandwiches
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/18/08
The Red Onion is a small little deli on Church Street located across the street from City Hall. All the sandwiches and pastries there are made fresh and they taste delicious. I have yet to try a sandwich there that wasn't good. Pros: extremely good sandwiches, especially the Red Onion Cons: a little on the pricey side, dining area isn't all that great

great food

Really awesome chicken salad sandwich! Every sandwich I've had here was the best! Very fresh lettuce, tomatoes (so red!), cucumbers, guac, and provolone on homemade wheat bread. A tasty ginger cookie wrapped things up

Delicious Sandwiches
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/29/08
The Red Onion, located in the heart of downtown Burlington, is known for their creative sandwiches made with high quality, fresh components. Their namesake, the Red Onion sandwich, which combines apples, bacon, cheeses, and turkey, among other things, is particularly savory. The prices are reasonable, probably around 6-7 dollars for a sandwich and 2 dollars for a drink. Its more of a lunch place than anything else. There are a few tables inside, maybe 5 or 6, but in the spring tables placed outside are very enjoyable. Service isnt too bad, maybe a little slow on a more crowded day. All in all, I think its definitly a place that shouldnt be missed on a trip into Burlington.

I always visit this place when I go to Vt. I take the ferry crossing carrying bag s of goodies to the NY side of Lake Champlain.

I was literally stopped in my tracks walking by this place last weekend by the smells coming from inside! There carmel oatmeal bars were very tasty but their Honey Oat Bread is hands down the best oat bread I have ever had. I bought a loaf to take home and could not stop eating it! I think I am going to take the 5 hour drive back to Burlington just for that bread. Check it out if your in the area, you won't regret it!

You have to try "The Red Onion"
By Gina, 5/26/06
Their signature sandwich is AMAZING! I live almost 3 hours from Burlington, so I can't enjoy this little piece of heaven on a regular basis. I've tried to dublicate it, but alas I have to wait for my next visit to Church St. Taking the ferry? Get a few different sandwiches and swap with friends on the ride across Lake Champlain. See what you like best. And don't forget to grab a few of their chocolate chip cookies as well!
