Food was absolutely awful.... service apalling. It amazes me how someone wrote anything positive about this place. I'm sure the proprietor had something to do with that. Never again would I eat there.... what a nightmare!
I called ahead to make reservations. I was told that they don't take reservations, but because we were coming at 6 there should be no problem. We got there to be given a forty minute wait. Okay. After waiting awhile for seats at the bar, the one bartender took my order. She came back only to tell me that they did not have the wine I ordered. (She had given me 2 choices). Forty five minutes later and after hearing others around us complaining I checked with the host to see when we'd be seated. He rudely said it would be at least another fifteen minutes.(I found out that he is the owner). An hour and a half later we were finally seated. The waitress took our order. Not too long after she brought us our drinks and the wrong appetizers. Next came the salads with watery dressing. The main courses were fine, but certainly not worth the hour and a half wait that we had. We asked for food to be wrapped and the bill. We got the bill, but never the food. We left at 5:30, only to return by 9:30. (The round trip was no more than an hour) Would we go back? NO!!!! Would we recommend it? NO!!!!!!!
We waited 20 minutes at the bar before the bartendress acknowledged us. We tried to get her attention by asking if we could order drinks and the lady told us that we'd have to wait. She then proceeded to serve several people who had arrived at the bar after us. When we mentioned that we thought she was being inhospitable she told us to stop complaining. I understand it was busy that night, but I could not tolerate that type of attitude. I've dealt with extremely rude and stuck-up bartenders in the past (I live in NYC), but I've never experienced that type of vial, unprofessional behavior. It was a really terrible experience for everyone. Avoid this place like the plague.
I dont know where to start, so I would suggest you save your money and go to McDonalds, at least you dont expect good service or good quality food there.
Rude service, poor food presentation and flavors expensive meal that is the standard at this place.
I wish I had listened to the first review of this place. What a nightmare of a tourist trap. Saying that the staff is poorly trained is being very kind. It took 45 minutes to recieve bread and salads, no drink refills ever offered. Entree did not arrive until 1 1/4 hours. The owners of this establishment should be ashamed of themselves. While the food was pretty good, the kitchen in no way made up for the incompetence of the wait staff. Definately the bottom of the barrel of restaraunts in manchester.
the food is okay -- not great but not awful, just okay. The service, however, is horrendous. We have tried Garlic John's on two different visits to Manchester. We had a different server each time, but the same horrible service. This time our waitress made us feel that she could not have cared less about us. We had to ask to order drinks, ask again to order food, ask for water refills. Dessert and coffee were never offered to us and by then we had had it and didn't want to ask for that as well. I don't know how this restaurant stays in business with such poor service when Manchester offers so many other dining options.
The rude and pretentious attitude of the bartender and owner/host was appalling. My party waited almost half an hour without being seated and was ignored when we attempted to buy drinks at the bar. We finally got the hint and followed the other families who decided to walk out. Rest assured we will never return - I would advise others to do the same.
I did not read any of the previous reviews prior to dining there last fall, but I am amazed at the disparity of reviews. We will be going back to Vt this week (April) and both of us are looking forward to more great food. I am very picky, but we dined @ Garlic John's twice and found the food fantastic. Perhaps there's a difference between the off season and busy tourist season as we couldn't think of a bad thing to say. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for very good food at reasonable prices.
WOW - We were in VT only once, and that was in 2002. We were staying at the Stratton Inn (off season) and had trouble finding a really nice place to eat. We found Garlic John's and had one of the best Italian dinners we've ever eaten. Very MEMORABLE, it's been 10 years and I have not forgotten this place. Cozy environment, Excellent food, reasonable prices.
