WOW. What a great place. It was very refreshing to get away from all the tourist traps. The food was excellent. The wine unparalleled. Great prices and the wait staff was extremely attentive. I must confess, I usually only write about my negative experiences; however, I must give credit where credit is due. Mama Di Matteo's in Bar Harbor is a destination in and of itself. The coffee dessert thing (can't remember the name of it) ... HEAVEN! take one (or two) to go, I did.
I know you are supposed to eat lobster here, but as I walked around the town hungry, nothing inspired me to eat until I smelled Di Matteo's. It pulled me in the doors, a rich mixture of basil and butter and garlic. The mushroom and crabmeat stew was thrilling. The veal saltimbocca ravioli was a delight to the nose and throat. I topped it off with a hot apple crumb a la mode that was the perfect combination of warm, sweet and cold. The coffee was outstanding in a coffee saturated town. You must eat here when you are in Bar Harbor.
Good italian food isn't fancy, it's just got to be good. Mama's has got this down. They have a nicely varied menu, with good specials nightly as well. Some recent favorites enjoyed there were their Tuscan steak, and gnocchi fresh made.
