Fore Street

Description

Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

Outstanding food. Brick oven pizza and fish are to die for.

This is one of the finest restaurants we have been anywhere in the country. Menu constantly changes based on what's available, and usually local. While they do serve seafood, there is a much broader selection, including pork, beef and poultry. Highly recommend.

Rated by Gourmet as 14th in the nation, well-deserving. Chef Sam Hayward is adventuresome, experienced, very promoting of Maine sources for his menu. The wait staff are knowledgeable, patient, informative, and very professional. Certainly our favorite in Maine if not New England. Although they take walk-ins, better to reserve ahead.

Supposed to be the best restaurant in Portland, this is a noisy cavernous place that is nevertheless most welcoming. Although the emphasis is on seafood, the menu is not limited to fish. Don't miss the roasted sardines or the garlic mashed potatoes.

We smelled like the wood-roasted cuisine that we were served as we left Fore Street. Amazing seafood and bread to die for. The pile of bread and the 'humidor' for the produce brought tears to my eyes. And you must try the mussels.

Excellent

I have eaten at Fore Street a couple of times. I have been very pleased with the service and food. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone. The prices are reasonable also.

Very good meal ...
By dfederighi, 4/13/07
Not sure why the reviews are mediocre for this restaurant. We just went and had a great meal with some friends, and while it was pricey, the quality of the food was worth it. As far as the ambience, it has exposed brick and some pipes, but I believe they are going for an urban vibe. The service was excellent, which you would expect, but it's all about the food. From the salad and bread, to the steak, garlic mash and beets for our main, we really enjoyed the meal and the experience. The desserts will also very, very good.

Excellent Restaurant

Service was prompt and curtious, the atmosphere is wonderful set in an open mill building layout with the kitchen open in the middle. The menu changes daily and always has something new and exciting to try.

Unimpressive!
By Kate, 1/11/07
My boyfriend took me for my birthday. The atmosphere was romantic, but I thought the dress was too casual for the prices. The entrees and side dishes we had- lamb & steak, sweet potatoes and turnips- were completely unimpressive, considering it was rated one of the 50 best by Gourmet. I would go again for the dessert however- he had pear d'anjou cake with dulce de leche and I had apple pot pie with bacon ice cream- two of the best desserts I've ever sampled.

What a disappointment!
By derek, 10/4/06
While the service was quite good, the food was uninspired and bland. The sea bass had the mushy consistency of "previously frozen". There are many places along the New England coast with much better food, and at half the price.
