I have visted many thai restaurants in Portland and this by far is the best one! The atmosphere is great, beer and wine is not over priced, and the food is amazing. The staff are ALL very friendly. However it is unfortunate that they are only open Tuesday- Saturday.
Great Thai food and decent prices. Service is friendly. There is some parking next to the building, but you may end up parking on the street. Lots of seating inside..so you don't often have to wait for a table. This place is really good for take out.
Bangkok Thai offers location, atmosphere and excellent food at phenomenal prices. Whether you want take-out, or to enjoy a social meal with family or friends, the biggest challenge will be to resist the urge to stay with your favorite (probably the first dish you ordered), and explore the many other tasty options on their extensive menu.
Upon entering the restaurant you are greeted by tasteful decor in warm oranges and complementary yellows. There are two large dining rooms for seating options - including a traditional Asian table setting where diners remove their shoes and sit on low benches. The first dining room is open to the main door, but shielded by room screens. In all the visits I've been you must wait to be seated by the hostess, and only once have I waited for more than 5 minutes. The drawback to the main room is that the busy kitchen is right next to it and can produce billows of smoke from the hot oil woks. For a quieter, more intimate and less-smoky experience, request to dine in the upstairs room.
Once seated, you are given a two-sided menu that lists an array of selections ranging from curries to thai noodles. I've been many times and enjoyed the Chicken with Lemongrass Chicken ($7.75), the Garlic Chicken ($7.25), the Bangkok Seafood ($11.00), the Red Curry with tofu ($6.50),the Green Curry with tofu ($6.50), and the Pad Thai with Chicken ($6.50). I would have to say that my favorite is the Red Curry with fresh tofu (usually it is fried) and at a level 3 spice. Portion sizes are ample enough to satisfy a hungry appetite. On several occasions, I've had left-overs to bring to work the next day.
I've sampled appetizers of Fried Tofu ($3.95), Crispy Dumplings ($4.25), and Fried Calamari ($4.50). My favorite is the calamari, which is prepared in a tempura batter (rice flour) and accompanied by a sweet and spicy dipping sauce.
I have not tasted the desserts, as I find I am usually quite satiated and ready to enjoy the rest of my night's activities.
The service is polite, friendly and usually efficient. On busy nights it helps to be patient with refills. The unusual thing is that chop sticks are not automatically provided as they are not your typical disposable variety. You will need to request them if you wish to dine more traditionally.
Parking, usually the biggest challenge to a restaurant in the downtown Portland district, is generously provided next door in the parking lot behind Joe's for diners eating after 5:00 pm.
I find that the corner of State and Congress is my new favorite place for Asian fare. It is healthy, quick and easy on the wallet. While my diet won't need to resist their tempting treats, I will still need to resist my tendency to order my favorite, the Red Curry!
Bangkok Thai is a sure thing if you are into Thai food! The Decore of the restaurant is unmatched in Portland's Thai Restaurants. Prices are reasonable (around 7.95 for Chicken Phad Thai), and the staff is always friendly. Check out the seasonal specials like Mango & Sticky Rice in the summer and Thai Ice Tea. Parking is available behind Joe's Smoke Shop. A great place for a first date!
