Have eaten at Muddy Rudder many times.
The food is generally very well prepared, especially the vegetables. Sometimes the hot food has cooled a little too much before it reaches the table, or the meat isn't completely trimmed.
The decor and lighting are very nice. A few of the tables are in the path of busy waiters/waitresses though; like sitting in a diner, with people constantly breezing past at high speed. The bar area is very pretty, and the live piano music is a nice touch.
This restaurant would be really great if certain members of the wait staff were better trained.
Once we had a waitress commandeer the conversation at our table for extended periods while we were entertaining guests. Our guests were annoyed and we were embarrassed. (Nice person, but way too intrusive for a fine dining experience). Another time our waitress basically ignored us, never asked if our food was satisfactory, or if we needed anything, although she passed our table numerous times; and even dropped part of our dinner onto the table with a bang! and no comment when it was about 15 minutes late. This was our worst experience at this restaurant, and if we hadn't eaten there before, we wouldn't go back.
So overall I would say, try the food by all means, but if your service is below par, don't say you weren't warned :-
I've been here several times over the past few years and each time it gets worse. The atmosphere is beautiful, you can't beat the location but the food is HORRIBLE!! Don't be fooled by all the cars in the parking lot, you can get better seafood at, well... anywhere!!!
Sure, the view is quintessential Maine. A tidal river and marsh with (while we were there) a Great Blue Heron and a seal. The sun was setting while two fly fishermen worked the river. Frankly it was barf perfect! If I wasn't already married, I would have proposed.
Actually we almost forgot the view as soon as the food came. I had cajun salmon. Absolutely great. The veggies were perfect. My wife had lobster pie that she loved, and my daughter kept picking at the crust. Now here's the real surprise. My daughter had buffalo wings. Now who would think a waterfront seafood restaurant in Maine would have the world's best buffalo wings. Go figure.
Great food, view, and we wanted to bring the waitress home. Wonderful restaurant.
The Muddy Rudder is the perfect lunch spot after shopping in Freeport.
Lobster rolls and artichoke chicken pasta are fabulous!
Peppercorn Parmesan salad dressing outstanding.
Nice people and a great Maine view out of the large windows of wildlife and marsh.Have eaten here for years every time we visit the area of Freeport.
Known for having the best wings, nachos, and burgers in town, this unique restaurant also features an enormous menu that
includes spicy and hearty dishes, award winning desserts, and a large vegetarian selection. They are open daily for lunch ...
