Brown's Lobster Pound

Description

In 1947 my father Hollis I. Brown and his good friend Louis F. Violette both of Seabrook, NH had been laid off from their respective jobs and went into business hauling lobsters out of Maine and selling them to markets throughout the Merrimack Valley. In 1948 they opened a lobster pound on Rte.1 in Hampton, NH by the Taylor River and ran that for two years. In 1950 they left there and opened at the present location at 407 Rte. 286 Seabrook where the saltier water was better for the lobsters. They just sold lobsters and clams alive or cooked and lobster meat.

Had lunch at Browns on Memorial Day - Food was received cold and after bringing it back they could care less. Spent 38$ for long wait and cold food, ended up throwing it away - Stay away

I love Browns, I have been going to Browns forever! thats the thing with Browns...I love the noise and the long lines...I think the seafood is great! I've tried lots of seafood and always go back to Browns...of course there are some days that are busier then others and some days the food is better then others...but overall...to me its always great!! Its a good time..you bring your own beer and wine and some friends and its a guaranteed good time!!...I never do take out because fried seafood and takeout is never a good idea...soggy...I don't think anyone should write off browns without trying it at least twice..when its busy its crazy there and its hard to function at any restaurant when its busy...The don't have a hostess or seating chart so its hard to control how many people are in the building...but they do the best they can and those of us that have been going there for years....we get it and expect it to be that way sometimes. See you soon Browns.

My husband and I went for dinner on 3/20/10. It was a very busy day. We waited about 45 minutes to order (this system was a joke-the people going to the counter to pick up their dood having to push through a little door that was clogged with the people waiting to order). When there were finally only two people ahead of us to order, we had to wait for the register tape to be changed. We finally made it to the counter, and the old man cashier said we had to wait for John to take our order because he was done. We finally ordered to go because it was incredibly loud in the eating area, then decided to eat in. I think they forgot about our to go order, because they called all the numbers around ours, up to 10 numbers higher. Our food finally came out after at least 30 minutes. When we opened our to go containers, there was hardly any seafood in my seafood platter-one tiny peice of haddock, two shrimp, three clams and three scallops. The seafood platters I had seen come out on plates were loaded with food. We had more french fries than seafood. To top it off the food was cold. Our to go order had clearly sat forgotten for lord knows how long. $38.00 bucks for a long wait, small portions and cold food. Very disappointed!!

Overpriced and over-rated. You have to wait in line outside unless ordering lobster. Then you go inside and find a table, go get your food when called, and clean up after yourself. Tartar sauce isn't given unless asked for, and cup size is extremely small. For the same price we could have gone to a restaurant where we were acutally seated and served and gotten the same quality of seafood. We were not impressed.

I had lobster roll, crab cake, chowder, steamers, slaw. bring your own beer/wine cooler and no wait staff so no 20% tip. It is a great representation of America gone by. You feel free there. Open spaces and on your own.

I LOVE THEM
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/29/06
Brown's is a great place to go for lobster in the rough and steamed clams. Very informal and nice for being with visiting friends for an afternoon. You eat on picnic tables, but it's clean and wide open. My only complaint would be sometimes the service is a little cold, but it's understandable that they serve hundreds every day. Take it with a grain of salt and enjoy the food and casual atmosphere. They do know how to cook a lobster and fried clams. I will always return here. Nice variety of food, ATM as you will need cash, and plenty of parking. Bring your own favorite alcoholic beverage, too. Keep up the good work Browns!
