Enjoy a bit of fresh air, while you sit here and eat. This friendly brasserie offers a charming and gracious service to all the guests. You can also dine on the familiar French food here - if you do so, you would be following the footsteps of Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and others. This is definitely a place to haunt, if you are a scholar or even if you are just into good food.
Extremely rude and arrogant maitre de made us feel very unwelcome. The soup and side dishes were poorly cooked and barely seasoned. The meat was acceptable but overpriced. We passed on dessert because the atmosphere was so unpleasant that we didn't want to stay there any longer.
As those who remember Balzar from its better days have been saying for a couple of years, the restaurant maintains a warm, traditional ambience while it has let the quality of its food slip drastically. Two nights ago, my wife and I were served dry, stringy chicken there by a waiter who was barely more than indifferent.
At least half of the other diners appeared to be wealthy Americans of the type who don't care what they eat as long as they can boast of having dined at a fabled Parisian restaurant. Fabled it may have been, but the story has taken a sour turn recently.
Oh, and one more thing: the maitre d' asked me to leave him a little something extra when he seated us. I didn't, but I'm not worried about repercussions -- we won't be going back.
Le Balzar remains a very interesting traditional bistrot in Paris and it pleased me a great deal. The staff is incredibly attentive and kind, and some of the elements are very friendly and without fault. The food - given the fact that it is a bistrot - is quite excellent and tasty (the onion soup "au gratin" for instance, the "pied de proc" among other dishes), and the dcor reminds us of art deco days from the 20s! It is, indeed, a bit expensive, and sometimes in the evening a bit crowded, but you can always find some quiet evenings or you might go for lunch on week-ends!
