Tartine Bakery & Cafe

Description

This little place lends an undeniable taste of the French countryside to a bustling Mission District intersection. Though sweet items like cakes, pies, buns, cookies and pastry, may be Tartine's "bread and butter," the decidedly savory heartiest-and-most-Bechamel-drenched open-faced croque monsieurs you will ever have the pleasure of devouring, keeps neighborhood folks lining up for more. And speaking of bread, if you arrive early enough, you just might score yourself a loaf of the divine rustic country bread served (and constantly raved about) at sister bistro Bar Tartine . Just can't shake that sweet tooth? Opt for one of their beloved Morning Buns marbled with cinnamon and orange or the decadent Bread Pudding. Whatever you order, enjoy it at the big communal table gazing through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the entry of the 18th Street corridor.

Coffee and Pastry Heaven
By Hunter Hubby, 1/31/06
When I lived in Noe Valley, this was my favorite place to go on a Sunday morning. Great pastries, great coffee and a lively customer base. The coffee cannot be beat. They have an old espresso machine that takes some know-how and finesse to get a great cup of coffee, and their baristas seem to be well trained how to coach that perfect espresso from it. They have great Croque Mousier, keish with a perfectly flaky crust and unbelievable bread pudding. I've never even had their bread, other than under their croque mousier. It is crowded and the lines can be long. Often times you will have to sit outside where it can be chilly, but it is worth it. It is all worth it.
